Q: After upgrading to iOS 9.2, I have no service and my battery is draining quickly

I have an iPhone 6S. I live in the UK.

I upgraded to iOS 9.2 two days ago, and have seen two problems since:

  1. I cannot get any mobile service. I see "No Service" in the top left of the home screen when I try to search for service. Wi-fi still works fine. I turned my phone off and on again, and while it does find service briefly, it quickly goes back to "No Service". I tried going into the Mobile Carrier area of Settings and turning off the various options, then back on again. Nothing has worked.
  2. My battery is draining very quickly. It is 14:12 in the afternoon and I currently have 29% battery. Usually I haven't dipped below 60% when I get home at 17:00, as I do not use my phone very heavily. The Gmail app has taken up 35% of my battery life despite only spending 9 minutes on screen. My phone is warmer than it would normally be.

I have heard that when a mobile phone searches for service repeatedly, this uses a lot of battery. This phone has been set to Aeroplane Mode + Wi-fi since this morning - I have not had it searching for service at any point today.

People have recommended Resetting my settings, but I do not know what this will do to my phone, so I haven't touched it, especially since every time someone suggests this, it doesn't work for the afflicted person.

Is there anywhere I can check to see bug reports with the 9.2 release? I feel like there's an issue with it but I'm not seeing anything on the internet to suggest that.

If I go to "Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings" and do that, then the phone finds my carrier (GiffGaff) and connects just fine.

    For a while.

I even made sure WiFi was off and connected to the internet over 4G - everything was working fine.

15 minutes later, I checked my phone and it's back to showing "No service" in the top-left.

So it seems as if my phone IS able to connect to my carrier, and it works just fine, but only for a short period of time, after which it goes back to finding no service.

It's probably an issue with your carrier, or your SIM card, then. Contact your carrier and see what advice they have for you.

I would call up Apple... Many people on iPhone 6S have seen this problem since they upgraded to it.

I have tried the SIM card in an iPhone 5C which is not upgraded to iOS 9.2, and that one does not lose its signal.

This suggests that it is not the carrier or SIM that is at fault, but the update.

I have been looking around the internet to try to find other people who are seeing the same problems, but I cannot find any!

Where do you find people who have said they're having the same problem?

Most people are NOT having any problems. I'm not. Did you follow all the steps in the article? Did you back up and restore? Did you contact your carrier? If you're not going to do the troubleshooting, then there is no point in asking for help.

My previous reply was in response to Tj13parker's post - I wasn't stating that most people are having problems. I was simply asking him how he got the impression that they were, because I was curious.

On the topic of the article you linked me to, of the 9 suggestions (8 numbered steps and one un-numbered step) I have done 8 of them: Everything except for contacting my carrier, including a backup and restore.

After the backup and restore, my signal indicator is now jumping erratically between having 1 circle, having 4 circles, having 4G, not having 4G, and having no service at all. I suppose this is a slight improvement, but it certainly hasn't fixed the issue.

I can't contact my carrier very easily, since their customer support is essentially non-existent, but I have logged into my account and confirmed that I have credit, my account is in good standing, and that their service is not suffering any outages. And again, the same SIM in a different iPhone works perfectly.

This also doesn't address the issue of my battery draining very quickly, even with Airplane Mode turned on. It seemed Gmail used 35% of the battery in the last 24 hours, despite only being on the screen for 8 minutes, so I'll make sure that's not running in the background tomorrow to see if it improves the battery drain at all.

Your battery is draining because your phone is constantly searching for a signal. These two issues are tightly connected and once you resolve the signal issue, the battery drain issue will be corrected. You say you've done a restore, but was that from a backup or have you restored as a NEW device - that is, not loading your backup file just to test for a bit? This will serve as a test to see if something in your backup is corrupted or perhaps one of your apps is causing the issue.

I've kept my phone on Airplane Mode for the majority of time since this problem first happened, which means that it's not searching for service, and the battery still drains. The phone also runs warmer than normal, which I wouldn't expect simply from searching for service.

And I made sure to see what happened with the service after doing the restore, and BEFORE restoring the backup I made (A fresh iPhone, essentially), and it still had the same problem.

But it's no matter - I've contacted Apple Support as Tj13Parker suggested, and their best guess is that it's a hardware issue. It looks like I'll be getting the phone replaced at some point.

You've been very helpful, AmishCake! Having someone doubt me at every step certainly helps to get one's thoughts in order!

Im glad OP is possibly getting this fixed, I have the same issue as well but I'm not in the UK..

I just wanted to comment on your post Amish, if his phone is in airplane mode, its not searching for a signal. Thats the point of airplane mode, its not searching for any service, when you turn it on it shuts the services that search off. That's like saying a iPad is searching for signal constantly and thats why its battery dies. I get you were trying to help, but at least read the full posts and what steps have been completed before offering little quips at someone on forums.

I phoned Apple Support, and they advised that I go to the Apple store for a walk-in appointment, which I did this morning.

After diagnosing my iPhone 6S and finding nothing wrong with it, the fellow tried his own SIM card in the iPhone, which worked fine.

So it seems that somehow the update (Or maybe it was just a coincidence) made my SIM card faulty, despite the fact that it works fine in my iPhone 5C.

He's advised me to get another SIM (I have to wait 5 days for it to arrive, unfortunately!) from my carrier and try that, and if it still doesn't work then to return to the Apple store.

Simply posting this here in case this topic is ever of use to anyone else.

My Wife installed 9.2 on her iPhone 6 and the phone was "stuck" searching for service.

A hard reset allows the phone to connect to the network and work normally (temporarily) for like and hour or so.  It then goes back to searching indefinitely.

We swapped sim cards for the entire day. Her sim worked perfectly all day in my (non updated) iPhone 6.
