(1) You have a choice of many Mac-compatible USB cam. Some examples of current compatible cams are described at http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/.
(2) There are many other alternatives available from local electronics stores or from trusted on-line sources like http://www.ecamm.com/mac/icubie/. Be sure to verify that whatever camera is of interest is compatible with your Mac system. Ask if the advertising is not clear.
(3) OS X already has everything it needs for Mac-compatible cams. I recommend that you not add any OS X software that comes with your chosen camera to your OS X Mac, at least until you have tested your new cam without adding anything. (For use with Windows® on a Mac, feel free to install any compatible Windows® software your external camera may need.)
As OS X user Kurt Weber, who is using the Logitech C615 explains in this previous topic, the Logitech software is required in order to provide its HD images. However. as user Dave Stowe reports in the same thread, the added third-party software can contribute unexpected effects on some systems. Such possible interaction is the reason I do not recommend adding third-party Max OS X software unless the image is not acceptable without it.
