Q: Memory is at 11GB with no apps open

Hi community,

Late 2014 iMac 5k retina, 16GB RAM, 3.5Ghz Intel Core i5, 1.1TBHD

I would like to know if anyone else has any issues with RAM/Memory...ive been having RAM usage issues since i got my Late 2014 iMac but since I've added the recent updates (8/12/15) my RAM now sits at 11+GB used with no apps running. anyone else run in to this issue?

any help much appreciated

What kind of "ram usage" issues? Are you aware of how the OS uses and allocates ram? Do you use Activity Monitor to measure memory pressure? Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support

The thinking now is: unused RAM is wasted RAM, so you will see much more RAM utilized at any time. As long as the memory pressure graph remains green (in Activity Monitor) and your Mac is performing as expected, there is no need to worry.

It's not an issue. Unless you have a functional problem that you haven't mentioned, there is no need to do anything. Just use the computer and enjoy life.

the main FUNCTIONAL PROBLEM is when I'm using Pro Tools or Live 9 or Affinity Designer they hang mid use and crash. the GUI freezes. so believe me im TRYING to USE THE COMPUTER AND ENJOY LIFE. but its being hampered by these issues.

you are correct, this is NOT normal. look at your ram usage. first off, google how to kill any apps on startup. anything that isn't TOTALLY necessary, kill it. for instance i see the AVID APPLICATION MANAGER is starting in your launch agents folder. that APP has totally shut down my 2015 macbook pro on multiple occasions. i use protools AND live and it was a mess. google how to kill it on startup or just search for the uninstall icon and get rid of it. it isn't in the launchpad but do some digging. honestly that one app may be the problem. it was for me!

also, the google chrome helper is requiring WAY too much memory, google how to kill it. ridiculous that a browser would need such memory.

try those things and see what happens!
