My macbook will not start and set up

COuld someone help me with this situation? Ive had a number of mac s but this is the first time ingot this screen and i cannot start..

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8), Windows XP

Have you tried a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R keys and power button down for three chimes. Also a SMC reset. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 Here is what that means. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204156 It is telling you it can find no valid system folder. Do you have the install disc for you system.If the first two suggestions do not work. Insert the install disk into the optical drive hold down the C key and boot from it. Then run disk utilities on the hard drive. Including permissions.

That symbol does mean "no system disk". A corrupted system file can cause this. But so can a bad disk. You are running a very old version of OSX, which suggests the HD is also very old.

If you were making backups, prepare to use it. The install disks can restore an OS and then you can restore the backup with all of your programs and files.

I would, if you have not before, get a new HD. Macsales.com will advise you on a good disk for your particular age system. Macsales.com prides itself on knowing what macs need.

If you cannot find your original install disks, call 1-800-APL-CARE to ask them to burn replacements based on your system serial number (please do NOT post the serial number for us in this open forum!) for about $20 (labor, shipping, handling).
