Q: Was the heart rate sensor even worth putting on?

Anyone experiencing the heart rate detection to be very close to useless? I purchased my apple watch for a couple reasons... 1.) because I love everything apple, 2.) Because I didn't want to come up with $350 for a new Garmin watch that only did one function (working out) so I figured I would compromise and get the apple watch that might not handle working out as well as Garmin but would be sufficient but also give me all kinds of goodies.

Since I purchased the watch the heart rate sensor is extremely unreliable. I found out it absolutely hates cold weather so running outside with it it pointless if your looking to have your heart rate count your calories and keep you in certain zones. But then in the gym tonight, its reading 85bmp while my heart rate was in fact at 145bpm, then it would read accurate then go back to inaccurate.

I have owned it for a week now and I have not got through a single workout (run, elliptical, bicycle) without it failing to work properly. So getting your average heart rate is pointless. Some workouts I dont even get a reading until 10 mins in.

Curious to hear from anyone in here that has also been trying to implement the Apple Watch as their workout watch. Maybe I have a faulty watch?

    Hi fpalestini,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that your Apple Watch is not monitoring your heart rate as accurately as you expected. There are several factors that can affect the accuracy of your heart rate while using Apple Watch. For advice on how to achieve better results, I would suggest reading over the following article in its entirety to understand what factors can affect this reading.

    Thank you Joe_7399.

I read the supplied info. Watch is tight to wrist. All the other suggestions are out of my control. I cant control the colder weather. Went for a bike ride in 60 degree weather yesterday and it took 2 miles before giving a proper reading. Thats less than sufficient.

I have a bluetooth heart rate strap and manage to link it up but it seems like out of the blue the wrist heart rate will over take it and disconnect the bluetooth strap. I have yet to figure out whats going on there.

There have been many similar complaints here since the Watch was first introduced. At this point, I'm just hoping the next generation hardware will be more reliable.

Did you shave your wrist? I heard that may help. Also if it is not tight enough.
