How can I sync videos shot with an iPhone to an iPod nano

I want to sync videos shot with my iPhone to my kids iPod nano. The videos are stored on my iMac in the Photos application in a specific album.

I tried it using iTunes and Photo sync with that particular album selected, but nothing was synced. There were no error messages or warnings, just nothing synced.

I know I could manually import that video into iTunes and sync it as Movies, but there should be an easier way for that, right?

I think the method you mentioned is the way you need to do it. In iTunes, to sync movies to iPod, you set up the iPod's Movies settings screen (to select the movies you want sync). The iPod's Photos settings screen is for photos (image files). The movies do not appear on the iPod's Movies settings screen, unless they are in your iTunes Movies library.
