Q: need to transfer photos between iMac and iPhone 5c

instead of explaining what I can't do - here is what i want to do and I appreciate all suggestions to help me achieve what should be the most simplistic hardware to hardware  communication.

Quite simply, i want to upload the pix i take on my iPhone 5c to my iMac (for storage). Then i want to be able to choose some of the photos on my computer to send to my iPhone.  thats it.

other info that maybe helpful:

I currently connect phone and mac with usb - not wirelessly or with cloud

i do not want anything on the cloud or to share with other devices

all software and hardware on phone and iMac are most recent updates - OS X and iOS9

was using iPhoto but now pix are going to "photos"

I have all these albums and folders on iPhone that I cannot delete - I just want 2 folders: camera roll and a folder for photos I choose

I have tried to get answers on my own through forums and web but I cannot find anything that will allow me to do just this

I have been using iPhone and iMac since they came out  - not new to computers at all but not programmer either. not using iCloud because I don't want to  - not because I don't know how to use it.  I already paid Apple for plenty of storage on my iMac not sure why I am supposed to pay for something I already bought - except for maybe the conclusion that Apple has "updated" the ability to use my iMac and iPhone together to make me pay twice.  So if the answer to my question is that apple no longer allows direct communication between the iPhone and iMac - please let me know that - it will be a great add in my future purchase decisions as I can get a pc that makes this difficult for a third of the money.  Thank you.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

I have all these albums and folders on iPhone that I cannot delete

Which albums are you wanting to delete? Some albums like Selfies, Panoramas, Videos, Bursts, Screenshots and Hidden only appear if a photo meets the requirements to be considered one of them.  You can't get rid of those "smart" albums unless you delete the photos that are in it.

Thank you for your swift reply - obviously I have been away from this for the holidays....I get what you are saying and would be fine deleting the photos from the albums if I was sure it would not delete the photos from my phone entirely..would you mind confirming for me that it would not wipe out the photo entirely?  I will begin swiping once I hear back from you -lol  Happy holidays to you!

There's 2 independent steps to follow to do what you want.

    1. Get the Photos off of the iPhone.

Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer - Apple Support

If Photos is already being used for this, then this step is done, your pictures are now in Photos. Anything that was taken with the iPhone can be deleted from the iPhone using the trashcan icon in the Photos App on the iPhone.

    2. Put whichever photos you want back into the iPhone.

You will need to use iTunes to sync the photos from your computer back onto the iPhone. You can choose what photos or albums you want to sync specifically.

Synced photos in this manner cannot be deleted directly on the iPhone, but must be unsynced using the same process with iTunes to remove them from the iPhone.

Sync photos from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes - Apple Support
