I recently changed my Netflix password on a different device but Apple TV does not recognize it. I assume this could be attributed to the old password being saved in the background... ? How can I get past this?

I was in the same situation recently. Netflix is aware of this issue.
In the mean time I uninstalled the Netflix app (Settings->General->Manage Storage) then installed the app again from the App Store.
I was then able to sign in with my new login details.

I just had to do exactly the same thing after updating my Netflix password.
Thanks for posting this solution workaround... my next step was going to be a factory reset of the the AppleTV 4.
