Question

Can anyone help me run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test).

I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting the apple logo / spinning disk / white screen syndrome on start up.
It only boots ok in safe mode (holding shift).
AHT (Apple Hardware Test) was recommended but it is not loading after pressing start button / holding D button.
Also I confirmed that
I do not have the original installer disks, but I do have both 10.6.8 and 10.7.5 installers on a USB pen drive but I don't think they have the AHT app on them and even if they do, how would I load AHT from them?
I have internet connection via ethernet cable and I was able to confirm that I had a good connection when booting in safe mode.
I did notice that after booting in safe mode, going to network prefs, I cannot switch on airport card.
Memory seems all ok.

Here are the specs of the Mac Pro: 
 Mac Pro 2006 1.1  2 X 3Ghz Intel Dual core OSX Lion 10.7.5 10GB RAM  NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Graphics card  Macally keyboard with Multilaser mouse.

You need one of the disk for the original set that cam with the Mac. Upgrade disk do not include AHT.

The original release DVD disc #2 is not bootable. But has the hidden .diagnostics directory located in a hidden directory here:

/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics

Somewhere along the line Apple intended for that directory to get copied into the working system, at the same location. But Users are discovering that whatever mechanism was supposed to do the copying did not do it, or replacing the Boot Drive did not manage to restore it to that directory.

If you have a copy, you can copy it there if you want to bad enough. If you do, it will activate at startup with the D key (no DVD needed).

Some Mac models that support Internet Recovery can also do Internet-diagnostics, but the silver tower Mac Pro is not a member of that club.

The difference with Safe Mode is that it loads a minimal set of Apple extensions, and NO third-party extensions. when your Mac can boot into Safe Mode but not regular Mode, the problem is often with added extensions. That would be the items in:

/Library/Extensions

some of the items there are holdovers from Hardware drivers Apple previously included in Mac OS X. My folder has these, none of which I am actively using:
