Man telling me to download Citrix

Hi, I just received a call from a woman, who then switched over to a man and they told me that in my Microsoft account (i have hotmail) someone potentially sent me a scam email and i accidentally opened it and now I have risk for someone hacking my computer. They said they were from Microsoft help technicians. They told me I need to download Citrix to figure out the problem. Can someone tell me if this is real or not? He gave me the number of the company to call him back, but I never got notification saying I had a hacker (which i doubt is a thing anyway). I did check my "terminal" and did an "netstat" check and it said I had 8 ESTABLISHED foreign addresses (which I am guessing is bad in the first place), but the Citrix webpage didn't look real to me. Just wanted to check if this has happened to anyone else before I move forward in trying to get rid of those ESTABLISHED foreign addresses using this company or whomever it was who called.
Thanks!

This is totally a scam. For one, Microsoft do not reach out and call users with infected (or potentially infected) systems. Can you imagine how many millions of calls a day they'd have to make in order to reach every Windows user?

No, instead they are scammers playing a numbers game - there are so many Windows PCs out there that the chances are most people they call will have one. The story about installing Citrix gives the scammer unfettered access to your system from which they can steal any data they like and, in most cases, cripple the machine in some way, subsequently leading to a 'clean up charge' to rid your machine of the crapware they just installed.

There is nothing legitimate about this call. The best thing you can do is scream obscenities at them - it won't change their thinking, but at least you'll feel better knowing that you didn't fall victim to their scheme.
