Q: Secure notes won't unlock

So, basically, with 10.11.2 all of my secure notes in my keychain can no longer be read.

I've saved quite a few secure notes with various bits of personal information, and up until now, it's been great. I go into keychain access, select the note, I click on "show note" and it asks for my login password and voila.

Now, it no longer accepts my login password. It's just stuck. The keychain first aid option is now gone from keychain access as well. So now all of my secure notes are inaccessible. Which means I'm completely screwed.

So, in other words, destroy all my secure notes.

    Really?

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

We had a long trip over the weekend, so I didn't have a chance to circle back to this until today. I was prepared to capture a console log of attempting to open a secure note as before, but this time it opened correctly. My login password was accepted to open the item and it displayed.

Other than time passing, I'm not aware of anything that happened between then and now that would be in any way significant.

    The mystery is complete.

I don't know about you but I always hate those problems that solve themselves. They seem to have a habit of coming back to haunt you at the least convenient time.

In the past I have had similar problems with Keychain and notes. My solution was I switched over to 1Password and have not had any problems again. I also discovered that 1Password was able to do far more then Keychain. Plus the encrypted database was synced between all my devices including my iPhone.

    Linc

I've had the same problem with Keychain.  It will not allow me to see any secure notes.  I've got hundreds of notes.

I followed your instructions and the log is as follows:

12/27/15 11:43:55.279 AM SecurityAgent[881]: Ignoring user action since the dialog has received events from an untrusted source

12/27/15 11:44:00.076 AM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.FileStatsAgent) Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 10 seconds.

    12/27/15 11:44:00.201 AM CalendarAgent[407]: [com.apple.calendar.store.log.persistent.operation] [CalOperationQueue (x-coredata://B266FC50-4FE1-41FE-A343-8A98DC8C615C/ExchangePrincipal/p9): <CalExchangeSyncAccountOperation: 0x7fef2ac129a0> failed with error Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1002 "unsupported URL" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=unsupported URL, NSUnderlyingError=0x7fef2d35ae20 {Error Domain=kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork Code=-1002 "(null)"}}.]

12/27/15 11:44:45.569 AM SecurityAgent[881]: Ignoring user action since the dialog has received events from an untrusted source

I tried twice to unlock the secure note.  the events at 11:44:00.XX came up after the attempt to unlock the note.  I don't think they are related.

Also, I tried to restart the computer, and before the desktop was populated with icons, I opened Keychain and was able to unlock a secure note.  I checked the access control button, reviewed the window and return to the Attributes window and but could not unlock the note that was just opened.

    your thoughts?

    John

I fixed the problem by disabling xGestures (third party mouse gesture software).
