How do you remove the default iTunes genres in the newest version?

I just updated to version 12.3.2.35 today and the localizable.strings file doesn't look the same as it used to. It used to just have a bunch of strings, where I would delete the ones contained in the /* ===== Genres ===== */, /* ===== Reduced Genres ===== */, and /* ===== CDText Genres ===== */ categories. However, now the localizable.strings file looks like it's some kind of compiled code or something and I can't seem to find where to delete the default iTunes genres again. I really don't want to have a bunch of useless genres in my drop down menus. Does anyone know how to remove the default genres?

Looks like they've switched to a binary file format, possibly because edits to the file could affect use of Apple Music ... which is unfortunate for those of us who don't use Apple Music and would like to restrict the list of available genres. There may yet prove to be a workaround, but definitely worth reporting via Apple's iTunes Feedbackpage.

Yes, I've found the same thing. Shame, since I'd been routinely stripping out most of the standard genres, since I actually only use five - Classical, Popular (for music), Audiobook, Radio Drama and Documentary (for spoken word).

Is it possible to remove them in another way? Just want to confirm as the way I interpreted your answer left a thin ray of hope in my mind.

I converted the binary form into XML and had a poke around. The genre labels are now scattered all over the place. It is no longer possible to remove them the way it was before.
