Q: migration assistant created partition on 2 mac with 2 users, can I restore to factory settings and start over?

After using migration assistant to transfer my info from old macbook pro ( 10.6.8 )to new one (10.10.5), the majority of my files and settings did not transfer over.  According to someone who knows more about computers that I do, it created a partition with 2 separate users on the new macbook  I want to go back to factory settings  on the new Macbook and try a different method to transfer everything over.  How who I do that?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

It will do that if the user name on the new mac is different than what is used on the mac you are transferring files from. If you are using the same user name it should write the old file to the new user account over writing what was there.   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350 Read down at the bottom of the link.

I have to add that as long as the old mac still has your file on it. You could use recovery to erase the indented drive on the new mac and reinstall,. Then use migration assistant to transfer. I usually do not transfer settings as when I set up a new operating system I don't need them. You can pick what files to move. If both mac's are using the same user name it should transfer the file and only have one account. There  are likely to be some apps from 10.6.8 that will not run on the new operating system unless there is an update for them. This may require some checking. You could on the new mac, with admin privileges  pull the files and folder off the home folder you don't want to the desktop and import them into your new home folder. Could take some time depending on how much you have.
