Q: How do I transfer mail, iTunes, Safari, etc from my 2008 MacBook running OS 10.5.8, to a new MacBook Pro (with Ethernet port) or a new MacBook Air?

I am replacing my 2008 Macbook that maxed out at OS 10.5.8, with a new MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.  The Pro has an Ethernet port, the Air doesn't.  I want to transfer all my application user data (mail, iTunes, Safari, etc) to the new Macbook that will be running El Capitan.  How do I do it?

Which machine are you leaning towards? With the Air you would have to use ether WIFI or have the old drive on an external drive setup. The easiest way with a new Macbook Pro is to use migration assistant. Go to your Macbook in utilities and see it you have it. Here is a link about what you can do.  http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html It says Lion, but it applies the same .Here is what apple says.  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350 Be aware that some of the apps in Leopard will be obsolete in El Captian. It you transfer them, it can cause problems. I use the thought that if I can replace it with a download I do that. Or transfer, if there is an update for it.
