Instructions to transfer files to new iMac

Can someone point me to a link on Step-by-step instructions to transfer files/programs from an old mac to a new mac? I finally found the right FW400 to FW800 cable which now contest the new iMac's Thunderbolt port using the FW/Thunderbolt adapter. Now I need the instructions. Easy ones. Thanks
