iMac suddenly drop to half performance after 2months - Geekbench

Hi Folks

My iMac suddenly drop to half performance and i can't spot the reason why. I have lately installed SSD drive in my iMacLate09 and the performance was very good for long time. Then all of a sudden the performance is half. I have trim enabled from the start, half the SSD drive is free 168gb free out of total 250gb. My system is a copy of my iMac11 and i see no performance drop on iMac11 that i spend 10times more time on that the iMac09.

Hello there, i have exactly the same problem with my imac late 2009 i7-860.

The processing power is down to one third of the original.

I have tested everything fount on internet but nothing worked.

I am afraid that i may have damaged the logic board on screen cleaning.

I have found that replacing the processor solves the problem as the root of the problem is the processor that beeing defected.

Did you find a solution after 1 year from last post? It would be very helpful.

I would love to hear from you before purchasing a new CPU.

The Samsung EVO 850 has a poor reputation among Mac users. The only SSD retrofits I use and can recommend are sold by OWC / MacSales. They will work. Others may not.

Installation and use of ill-conceived "cleaning" garbage is a horrible thing to do to a Mac. That EtreCheck report indicates number of other problems exist, too many to conveniently enumerate. Addressing each individual problem will be time-consuming and tedious with little guarantee of success. How would you like to proceed?

Dec 12, 2015 4:31 PM in response to John Galt

Hi John

Ok, i have the same SSD in my iMac11 and have no problems, several people online recommend the samsung ssd's for imacs. Maybe the iMac09 can't work well with the evo850, i don't know enough about.

I can maybe write 0's to disk and try to clean potential garbage that is "clogging" the SSD if this is the problem, but disk speed test says it good as new. Not sure it's a SSD related problem but when i run speed test of SSD drives i get 250 mb/s r/w. My HHD is 50mb/s r/w normally the SSD's hit 50-100mb/s if the trim is not enabled, so not sure if it's SSD related issue?
iMac09 only supports 3 gigabit speed so 250mb/s seems makes sense since the evo850 hits 500mb/s on 6gigabit on my iMac11.

If you see any issues you suspect is the issues let me know and i will test it. Thanks. All help is appreciated.

You had some real goodies installed; I've never heard of some of them (some of the others which have not been mentioned here) - did you use their uninstallers? Some of those mess with your system (CleanMyMac for instance which is known to clean so well that it deletes necessary system components), so your OS may be compromised. If things do not improve, I'd suggest a radical step: make a complete backup, boot into Internet Recovery (Command + Option + R); when you're connected to Apple's servers, use Disk Utility to erase your drive and then choose to reinstall the OS. You can then port over your user files - I'd be careful with what you copy back so you get a clean system start rather than copying back compromised files. After that, make sure to keep apps which affect your system performance to a minimum (or, better yet, do without them) - a Mac is quite good at taking care of itself as long as you don't change its intended behavior).

I see nothing but "issues". The problem is that your machine has been so extensively modified with third party hardware and software that it bears little resemblance to the Mac it once was. It is unreasonable to expect it to operate normally. Merely removing "CleanMyMac" does not reverse the corruption it is capable of.

If you were to take whatever you call that collection of parts to Apple and ask them to fix it, they would restore it to the condition it was when it left the factory. I suggest you do that. Short of restoring its hardware to a supported configuration, erase it completely, reconfigure it, and then evaluate the performance of its SSD.

From Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or OS X are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

Dec 28, 2015 8:56 AM in response to madsschou88

Restoring a Time Machine backup reverts the system's software to the state that existed at the time the backup was created. If that backup was created prior to having corrupted it with CleanMyMac then its subsequent effects will be rendered inert. Since you have been using it for four to five years, you will be reverting your system to the state that existed in 2011 or so. An "erase and install" might be preferable.

It won't address any problems that may be caused by the Samsung SSD. As I wrote they have a poor reputation among Mac users, so eliminating it as a contributing factor would require replacing it with a device that doesn't.

So now i have wiped my iMac and made a clean install. Enables trim and made a new geek bench test.

Under half speed of test from 3 months earlier:

September (singelcore 2122):

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/4725774

December (singelcore 925):

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/3597215

SSD speed test is 250mb/s + like always

I don't think it is an software issue? Can it be the SSD since it's more than half speeds on all parameters? Hmmmm.

Can any of you see what the issue could be?
