Q: iMac suddenly drop to half performance after 2months - Geekbench

Hi Folks

My iMac suddenly drop to half performance and i can't spot the reason why. I have lately installed SSD drive in my iMacLate09 and the performance was very good for long time. Then all of a sudden the performance is half. I have trim enabled from the start, half the SSD drive is free 168gb free out of total 250gb. My system is a copy of my iMac11 and i see no performance drop on iMac11 that i spend 10times more time on that the iMac09.

OK, i just tested my old HD drive where i have a OS X 10.8.5 installed i got similar score as i get now on my SSD with OS X 10.10.4. https://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/4772976

I thought the big deal with these ssd's was to enable the trim and then it should work fine? Hmmmm. Can i safe erase the ssd and write 0's to all blocks or is there another way to regain life in the ssd? Very confusing to target in on what that actual issues with that disk, since it shows 250mb/s r/w transfer speeds.. Normally the disk problems would show up in the disk transfer speed. When i did not enabled trim on my first other evo850 i had drop to 50mb/s r/w which makes sense since garbage is not cleaned out and it clogs up, but then i formatted and enabled trim from start i have no further issues for years, except now..

Is there a third level of problems beyond trim? and is it solvable?

    Cheers and thanks for reply's

Is there any real benefits proof with upgrading to El Capitan regarding third-party SSD's or is 10.10.4 enough? Is see this post talks about about there should be some benefits. I like to avoid upgrades when i can since it ofter creates issues.

I have no way to address TRIM support because OWC's SSDs already include that feature in their firmware, so it's one less thing to worry about. As for third party TRIM utilities, using them – or not using them,  depending on the manufacturer's SSD controller, can cause performance degradation or other unpredictable results such as sudden failure. For more on that subject here is one reference: http://macperformanceguide.com/SSD-RealWorld.html

Pull quote, slightly edited for taste:

"The TRIM feature helps restore an SSD to its original performance. But this requires operating system support, and Mac OS X does not have it. PC users might fare better in keeping their SSD in good working order. Bottom line is that TRIM is a half-a**ed feature for inferior technology."

The article is somewhat dated and I do not know if recent OS X versions incorporate third party TRIM support, or not, but I don't care for the reasons stated. Suffice it to say that Apple does not support retrofitting a Mac's original hard disk drive with a third party SSD, so they won't care either.

For what it's worth I have been specifying OWC's SSDs in various Macs for five years now, with no perceptible performance degradation or any other problems. They are only warranted for five years, so if they begin to degrade after that period of time I can't complain.

Ok, i see might be better to go with OWC in future, samsung does have great value for money SSD's though. Tjek http://www.macrumors.com/2015/07/01/os-x-trim-ssd/ would this be equivalent to operating system support. It's my impression the evo850 generation of SSD 2014-2015 had made a big improvement from my research and does degrade very little, assuming it's not my SSD that is the issue. Since my score is still low when testet on regular HDD, i suspect it is the logicboard that does not give cpu full power? Hmmm.

    Cheers
