thunderbolt to HDMI resolution problems

Hello everyone, i recently bought a Hanns-g 27" 2k monitor (it has HDMI,DVI,VGA port) to connect to my MBP 13" (early 2011) running on . Now i know my mac can support such external monitor showing up to 2k resolution but the problem is, that in the monitor option shows only max 1080p. User uploaded file

I'vetried to connect my thunderbolt port to the HDMI port in the screen via adaptor and and HDMI cable and most recenlty a belkin thunderbolt port to HDMI port with max resolution of 4k but i still get the same readings as in the pix above, also when i check my thunderbolt spec it shows no device connected even if there is a screen up and running on the same port....

would the use of the DVI port on the screen make any difference ? or is it just a problem related to my MBP ? thanks for any help guys

In the monitors Advanced settings, make sure DP EDID is set to 2560x1440.

Your Mac may be too old to support resolutions greater than 1080p via HDMI.

In that case you will need to use DUAL-LINK DVI

Be sure to use a DUAL-LINK DVI cable. You can't tell by the connectors. Single link DVI cables often use dual-link connectors.

I have the exact same problem and I also have the Apple Thunderbolt to Dual DVI adapter, but can't find a cable where the pins match the Apple adapter. A bought a dual dvi cable and it wouldn't fit (too many pins). A single DVI cable fits and that's when I get the same result as you. I did own a cable that matched the adapter a long time ago but can't find it!

It is the DVI-D cable that is needed. I have now got the HQ271 to display 2560 x 1440 using the Apple mini display port to dual link dvi adapter. The adapter is £99.00, luckily I already owned one. Once you have this and the DVI-D cable (another 10-20 pounds) then you can connect and get the full resolution, although...

It leaves a black band around the picture instead of using the full screen. So in effect, the 27" monitor is now only a 25" monitor. There is no access to the controls on the OSD to change the phase, clock, H Pos, V Pos... these are greyed. Also, text is not crisp, as if the monitor isn't running in native resolution.

So, the monitor was cheap but then you have to add the £99 adapter to get the full res. Fine for gaming but not for any detail work and looking at spreadsheets on this will likely give you headaches after a while.
