How to control a buddy's screen when screen sharing in Messages?

I need to help some relatives with their Macs but I'm having trouble with screen sharing. Why can I no longer control a buddy's screen in Messages? I only have the ability to magnify an area on their screen. I am using El Capitan on a 27" iMac. The people that I am trying to help have Yosemite on MacBook Pro's.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), null

Thanks but I have tried all that. I am able to SEE the other screen but not control it. My cursor becomes a magnifying glass and all i can do is magnify things on the shared screen. This is very frustrating because it used to work perfectly.
At some point I was directed to create a separate password for FaceTime and iMessages. Could that be the problem?
