Bad performance after some hours of editing

I would like to ask you help about my system performance.

I use fcpx last version on a mac book pro late 2013 equipped with 16GB and 1TB SSD disk, running osx last release.

Fcpx is installed on the Mac and the projects and files are all on an external hdd Buffalo thunderbold at 5400rpm.

So, I mainly edit 1080p clips, but after 2 or 3 hours fcpx slows down.

I mean that it becomes annoying to work while all editing tools get more to respond, mainly on the time line.

Do you think that a raid would be the solution?

Or do I should to check some setting to increase the performance?

Thank you in advance!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Can you tell us something about the project and the media format? How long is the project? Is it a multicam project? Are there a lot of graphics, stills, and effects?

Open Activity Monitor and check periodically to see whether anything noteworthy is happening as the repossess slows. Check free memory and swaps.

edit: You might also want to check the throughput of your media drive by running a speed test (say, Blackmagic or AJA).

The project includes full hd footage at 1080p both 25p and 50p, PAL system.

The total length is about 18 mins.

No multicam.

Just some graphics, just a couple of texts, and some transition.

Color correction made inside fcpx (no external plugins eg. Magic Bullet, Da Vinci, etc.)

While editing I can notice that sometimes (after some time of working) FCPX standby and the percentage indicator in the middle of the screen goes from 0 to 100 several times.

The thumb images of the clips on the time line get harder to appear.

The Activity Monitor is all idle.

So, what does it do? Does it backup ?

Please find attached the speed test I made on the media HD.

thank you
