Is it possible to remove software from my Mac?

Have some software on my Mac that I no longer use.........really would like to remove them, as I know they are taking up memory. How can I take them off?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Most apps can be deleted simply by dragging them to the Trash. However, advanced apps and suites like Microsoft Office (for example) need an uninstaller or additional steps to remove files stored on system folders. A simple way to know how to uninstall the app you want to is to look for information about uninstalling at the developer's website.

As @mende1 noted, you can usually just drag an app to the trash or look for its uninstaller. The latter method is the best. The former can leave behind preference and other files that are then useless space on your hard drive. I use AppZapper as a substitute to the "drag to trash" method. Other uninstaller apps exists that do the same thing. Search for "clean delete of applications on mac" for further ideas.
