How to show photos and videos from the Photos app via lightning-to-VGA connector?

When my iPhone (iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.2) is connected to a lightning to VGA connector, photos and videos in the standard Photo app won't display on the connected projector.

However:

1. Photos and video in Google Photos display fine.

2. Video in iMovie on the iPhone display fine.

It's only photos and videos in Photos app itself which don't play. I can project the thumbnails, but when I select a photo or video the projector goes dark. There is a message that it is trying to play via Apple TV (which I don't have and have never used).

So something is confused. Is there a way of fixing this?

Thanks,

doug

Hi Doug Lerner2,

It sounds like you are trying to project photos and videos that are not stored on your iPhone, but rather in your iCloud Photo Library. To test this, download one photo and one video from iCloud Photo library by going to icloud.com and using the Photos app. See if these two files project to your TV using the lightning to VGA connector.

Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:

  • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
  • On your Mac, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.

If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

You can also select the photos and videos that you want to download from iCloud.com.

Doug, if you have a TV with an HDMI port, the easiest way to stream all of the data on your iPhone to your TV is with a device called the Apple TV. Click on the links below for complete details.

Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

With AirPlay, you can stream music, photos, and videos to your Apple TV, or stream music to your AirPort Express or AirPlay-enabled speakers. And with AirPlay Mirroring, you can display your iOS screen on your Apple TV.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for your response.

(1) I do not use the iCloud Photo Library. If I did I would need the 200 GB (or is it now 500 GB?) plan because I have 20 years of photos. My Mac Photos library is enormous. At any rate, I am not using the iCloud Photo Library. The "iCloud Photo Library" inside Settings / iCloud is, and has always been turned off. These photos are definitely on my iPhone.

(2) In the classroom there is no TV. I was using a projector and that's why I needed to use the lightning-to-VGA cable.
