Q: FCP7 rejected my (only) serial number as an "upgrade."  Help!!

I migrated FCP7 from 2008 MacPro to this new iMac, but it is rejecting my (only) serial number as an "upgrade."

I have had FCP for years -- do not even know where the "original" is. I have been downloading since 2005. I never understood that I would need to keep my history of serial numbers.... It runs fine on the old machine, and I just want to move it over to the new one.

Wondering if Apple has a record of the legacy SN based on the upgrade?Any advice is very welcome!

Thanks

Rob

Thanks!  That certainly addresses my problem.  Unfortunately, I have not found any of that documentation -- I think we pourchased the original version in 2000 , then upgraded in 2008, when we bought the MacPro, but I do not have that disk nor can we find any of the proof of purchase.  So I may be in a cul-de-sac.  I'm leaving this as unsolved, but really appreciate the guidance.

    The nuclear option:

Do you have the upgrade install discs?

If that is the case see if you can locate any full version on ebay with a serial number.

If you can get one, you don't need to install it -

just use Final Cut Remover from Digital Rebellion (free) to remove all traces of Final Cut studio from your new mac.

Then install Final Cut Studio from the upgrade disks and when prompted enter the serial number of the original version followed by the serial number of your upgrade version.

This presumes you have  Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade install discs, and a way to use those discs on your new computer (like an external optical disc drive).

At any rate, if running FCS is important to you and your old computer is still working, you should immediately make a clone of the system disk so you have a backup if that drive fails.

    Hi

    Thanks so much.

I have not found any install disks. For some stupid reason, someone who shall not be named assumed everything was being done via the Web and boxed those, and they have been relegated to the cellar of no return.

I am about to talk to Apple Pro Apps -- and will report back.  However, I am resigned to purchasing FCPX, if that is what it takes.  New Computer, New Company....why not new FCP?  I am only mildly trepidatious , having heard that making the mnove to X is not like simply upgrading.  I hope that my aging brain is able to cope.

Thanks again for your continuing attention.  Misery Loves Company!

Final Cut X is a completely different application that uses a completely different editing paradigm.

The only thing it has in common with previous versions is the name.

You cannot open legacy projects directly in the new version.

Fortunately, you can do a 30 day free trial to try it out before you purchase it.

It is a buyers market in editing software these days - you can even get terrific editing software for free:
