How can I get photos out of iCloud Photo Library for permanent storage out of the cloud?

I take many photos and I can't keep them all in iCloud Photo Library forever without filling up disk space in my Mac and iOS devices. So I need an easy way to get old photos out of the cloud for permanent storage. I can't find the way to do this. Can anyone give a helping hand please?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), null

Select the photos you want to remove from the iCloud Photo Library in Photos on your Mac and use "File > Export > Export original files" to save the photos to a folder on an external drive. Then import these photos into a second photos library that is not syncing with iCloud Photo Library.

Once you have saved the photos to a different library delete them from the original library.

See this help page on how to work with more than one library: Use multiple libraries
