macbook pro cable fray warranty

Hi All,

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the charging cable near the magsafe connector has started to fray. It is out of warranty but I found this online suggesting there is 6 year protection in some cases, has anyone used this before out of warranty? Only applies in the UK.

Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no warranty for a fray on the cable, even when you have the Apple Warranty plan. I just went through this problem yesterday.

Look at the company thefrayfix for a component that will help with your next MagSafe adapter. It also shows some videos about how to repair your frayed cable when you are handy with tools. I ended up wrapping aluminum foil tightly around the fray, then covering that with tightly wound electrical tape. Ugly but effective.

The power adapter warranty follows your MacBook warranty, and its extensions with AppleCare, if any.

That said, the genius Bar technicians have been granted additional latitude to replace frayed cable that represent a SAFETY hazard, so occasionally they will replace certain badly-damaged units that do not show signs of abuse, or a case-by-case basis.

In general, you should go to the store planning to replace it yourself, and if the genius decides during your appointment time that Apple will replace it, "Merry Christmas".

Absent a frayed cable, the AppleCare warranty requires that service techs test the MB _with_ the power adaptor to determine whether the adapter really is defective.

Yes, the techs have latitude on a case-by-case basis, less so because of safety and more so because of their own good will. It may help to have an AppleCare plan, but that is no guarantee of anything here.

You'd be best to buy a new adapter in the meantime. Once it starts to fray, it only gets worse very fast. The woven shield wire that you see is the ground path for the power (bad design IMO). It will get hot, causing even more wear.

In the meantime, you could do this (at your own risk) ...

* carefully and cleanly strip back a bit of the insulation on the thinner wire leading from the fray to expose a bit more of the woven shield wire - goal: open a good path to reconnect across the frayed shield wire

* tightly wrap just the woven fray with aluminum foil to overlap completely through the fray - goal: reconnect the two frayed ends of the woven shield

* tightly wrap that part with something insulating (electrical tape, electrical putty, epoxy ...) - goal: re-insulate the frayed part
