If your iOS device disconnects during the update or restore or if iTunes couldn't tell the device to restore, you might see one of these messages:
- The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9).

Try these steps to restore your iOS device:
- Install the latest version of iTunes.
- Restart your computer.
- Check for updates to your Mac or PC. If you restart your computer for an update, check for updates again after you restart.
- Try to restore your device using another USB cable.
- Try to restore your device on another computer.
- Force your device to restart.

Jan 21, 2016 1:20 PM in response to alifromgizaby imodztech,I Just encountered this error also. As Ingo2711 stated the problem is..
- Connection to device is lost after the "Preparing iPhone for Restore" step but before the phone is actually wiped causing it to boot normally. Check USB connections and try again
Now for me this was not the case. What I found and how I resolved this issue was by updating iTunes.
Wend selecting "search for updates" iTunes gave me the pop up "iTunes is up to date"
however this his was not the case.
I had to go to iTunes.com and download the newest version, install then reboot PC. Once completed i was able to restore completely wi no more errors.
HOpe me this helps.
