If your MacBook Air is from late 2008 or newer, it can use the current version of OS X, El Capitan.
Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support
If it older, then I believe it requires Snow Leopard.
The first MBA (2008 - model identifier 1.1) can run Lion as the newest OSX. All subsequent MBA's can run El Capitan.
