Q: How do I delete files from SATA Internal Physical Disk APPLE HDD HTS547550A9E384 Media"

I have a MacBookPro9,2, Intel core i5 Runing El Capitan OS X 10.11.2

My (500.11 GB SATA Internal Physical Disk) "APPLE HDD HTS547550A9E384 Media" is completely full and I need to make space.

I can delete or move files to my external hard drive from my MacBooks (498.88 GB Logical Volume OS X Extended) "Macintosh HD Media Disk" just fine and I have freed up room on it but the "APPLE HDD HTS547550A9E384 Media" remains the same Full.

I have a Lacie 2 TB external hard drive with formated to GUID Partition map with a operational OS X 10.11.2

What can I do ???

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Where does it say full. Through about this mac-systems or in disk utilities Macintosh HD, bottom right. If you have already move a good number of files off the internal drive and deleted them on the drive it should show this . Unless, in spotlight it has not reindexed it.

In disk utilities I select the disk and click info and it displays capacity, used and available space.

I have already rebooted several times.

FYI: I am not very smart when it comes to computers but I continue to learn each day so I hope I can explain how I think it works and I am probably wrong. My internal hard drive is split in to 2 partitions one called "SATA internal Physical Disk" witch runs the OS X operating system and contains the directory.

The other partition is "Logical volume OS X Extended" I can access the Logical volume disk and it dose reflect storage capacity when I delete files. So if that is how it works then my question would be

#1 Is their a way to free up space on the "SATA internal Physical Disk"

#2 Can repair my directory so my computer will stop lagging I just got DiskWarrior 5 and I ran it on "Logical volume OS X Extended" and it completed successfully but it won't give me the option to run it on the "SATA internal Physical Disk"

    thanks for your help

Do you have files and apps on the main drive that you no longer need? As for Disk Warrior 5. Try renaming the SATA internal Physical Disk to Mackintosh HD. Or Your Name HD. If I give you a program to run. Will you run it and post the results?  https://support.apple.com/kb/PH19068?locale=en_US    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

    Think of it like this...

The Physical disk is your house. It is the hardware device.

The logical volume is a room in your house. If your house only has one room, the room is nearly the size of the house.

Your files exist in the logical volume... in the room.

If your 500 GB hard drive is full, you need to remove at least 50 GB of data. The OS saves caches and temporary files to the hard drive. These can take up several GB of disk space.

I am currently moving all my data to my external drive after that I was planing on completely wiping my mac and reloading some of the data and as far as the apps I'm not sure just how to go about that I don't have very many so I was thinking of downloading them again via the app store.

Ive had this mac for 4 years and I have never did any sort of maintenance on it. Just recently I began to take interest in learning to do this because I don't like the idea of dropping my macbook of with some IT stranger and because I would like to learn more so I could maintain my computer in the future.

So any advice you can give me would be grate.

To answer your ? Yes I would Run the program and post it.

#1 As I clear up space on my logical volume it reflects. But the physical disk still says it is full. Is this normal ?

#2 you said that "The OS saves caches and temporary files to the hard drive. These can take up several GB of disk space" so over time of me adding and deleting or moving files these actions accumulate data on my disk right ? ware is this data stored on my Physical disk or the logical volume.

#3 So the ( I will call it directory data ) accumulation over a long period of time how dose if affect my operating system quality. And how can I get rid of it.

    any info helps thanks.

Yes, just ignore that bar on the physical drive.

#2 you said that "The OS saves caches and temporary files to the hard drive. These can take up several GB of disk space" so over time of me adding and deleting or moving files these actions accumulate data on my disk right ? ware is this data stored on my Physical disk or the logical volume.

No. The OS cleans up after itself and deletes old cache files when they are no longer needed. All data is stored in the logical volume which is physically the physical disk.

#3 So the ( I will call it directory data ) accumulation over a long period of time how dose if affect my operating system quality. And how can I get rid of it.

As I said above, the OS cleans up after itself. You don't need to do anything.

I was going to answer the question about log and cache files, but Duane already did. But you can move you Itunes library to an external drive.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201625  Which would be music and any music videos. And using that option you can also restore them. You can do the same with Imovie.   https://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289?locale=en_US It used to be that even if you moved the Itunes and movie folder to the external drive and inside of Itunes you deleted the music and the movies, as long as the external drive was connected you could play them in Itunes. Someone may correct me on this as I have not tried this in some time.
