Q: iTunes 12.3.2.35 not recognising iPod classic

My iPod classic is not being recognized by iTunes. it was being recognized and syncing properly several weeks ago, but not now with version 12.3.2.35. running OS/X El Capitan v. 10.11.1. The iPod shows in Finder, but in iTunes the iPod is grayed out.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

If it appears in iTunes, it is being recognized.  But I don't know why it is greyed out.  Someone else had a similar issue...  If the iPod currently appears on the Mac's Desktop, or in a Finder window sidebar under Devices, right-click it and do a Get Info.  In the Info window, what does it say for Format?

Sometimes it appears in iTunes greyed out; other times it does not appear at all. Right now I plugged it in and iTunes opened automatically, but it does not show up at all, although it does show up in Finder under Devices. The info window says Format: MS-DOS (FAT32)

The last Restore for your iPod must have been done on a Windows PC.

For that "someone else" I mentioned, it seemed to be related to the iPod being formatted for Windows (FAT32).  iPods should actually work fine on Mac even if formatted for Windows (because Macs can read/write the Windows FAT32 disk format).  You were already using this iPod with your Mac, and I have an older iPod that is formatted for Windows, and it works fine on my Mac with latest OS X and iTunes.

If everything on your iPod is in your iTunes library (so you won't lose anything), you may want to do a Restore using iTunes on your Mac.  This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.  During this process, if done on a Mac, the iPod is formatted for Mac.  The Restore button is on the iPod's settings screen in iTunes; if you cannot access that screen (due to current issue), please post back.

Put the iPod into Disk Mode

Then connect to your Mac running iTunes.  Hopefully, iTunes will recognize it.  It may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery."  With a Mac running the Restore, the iPod will be formatted for Mac when completed.

Unfortunately, the iPod is still not showing on iTunes, not even greyed out

When you connect it now, what does the iPod's screen show?  Does it acknowledge being connected (even though it does not appear in iTunes)?  Does it at least show the battery charging indicator?  Or is it like your did not even connect it?

Before, it appeared in Finder, but not in iTunes.  Does it still appear in Finder?
