Q: get message start up disk almost full.  It is full of OTHER.  What is this?

I am receiving a message that Start Up Disk is almost full.  When I look at the contents of the disk it is mostly OTHER.  What is this and how do I delete it?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

    Hi Summiteer,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your Mac. If you are getting disk full messages and are seeing what seems like an unusual amount of disk space being taken up by Other, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following article helpful:

Like it is said in the link that brenden posted, "Other" can be many things.

You need to clear out some disk space.

Most people accumulate stuff over the years and end up with lots of files they don't need.

In any case, it is important to have things backed up. So if you don't already, you should make a backup of your drive to an external drive.

You can use Time Machine for it.

Next you may want to look for large files. Maybe over time you downloaded some video files that you watched and forgot about; they can be taking GB of precious space in your SSD.

You can use the Finder to look for large files.

Press Command-F and set the search criteria. It may be something like this (note the selection on "This Mac" to search all over the disk):

If you don't see "File Size" as a criterion for searching, you need to click on Other... and then check the corresponding box.
