Q: 10.11.2 update crashes my iMac

I've been trying all day to update my mid 2011, 21.5" iMac from 10.11.1 (with all updates) to 10.11.2. It's failed to complete successfully every time.

Attempt 1: I updated directly from the Apple Store. The update appeared to complete successfully. The desktop appeared. However, all the files on the desktop displayed the icon that means OSX doesn't know what app to open the file with. When I clicked the Mail icon, a pop-up appeared that said it couldn't run the mail app. In Finder, the Applications folder was empty except for the Utilities folder which was also empty. The usual drop-down menu appeared when I clicked the Apple icon in the menu bar and Restart worked. The restart seemed about as usual except it hung for maybe 15-30 seconds about 3/5s of the way through according to the status bar. It came back up in the same state; i.e., the desktop appeared but it couldn't find or run any apps. I restored the iMac to the last 10.11.1 Time Machine update from yesterday sucessfully.

Attempt 2: I just installed Norton a week or so ago. I thought maybe it was interfering so I ran a script from Symantec's website that says it removes all traces of Norton from a Mac and restarted the Mac. I updated directly from the Apple Store again. This time when the update was complete, the screen came up solid white all over. The mouse still moved so I tried clicking where I thought some of the menu bar and dock icons should be. No response. I restarted by cycling the power button and restored the 10.11.1 Time Machine update. I ran First Aid in the Disk Utility on the system disk. It didn't report any problems.

Attempt3: I downloaded osxupdcombo10.11.2.dmg from Apple's website and did the update with it. The desktop appeared but, again, all the apps appeared to be gone. I restored the 10.11.1 Time Machine update. That's where I'm at now.

Actually, I tried several other variations. I didn't keep a log so I can't describe them precisely. I'm pretty sure the the above captures the important steps. I see from other forum posts that a few other people have had problems installing 10.11.2 but most people seem to be getting along all right so there must be something peculiar about my 10.11.1 installation. I'd surely appreciate any ideas what else to try or how to diagnose the problem

    I don't know why the Forum software added "Mac OS X (10.7.3) to the end of my post. About This Mac says I'm running 10.11.1.

    If you can boot your system, then post the panic report.

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546>

    <https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753>

    If you cannot boot, then boot into Safe mode, and then post the panic report

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

    After posting the Panic report, add a new reply with the EtreCheck output (even if you have to do this via Safe mode)

    <https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>

    Many panics when upgrading are caused by 3rd party kernel additions that have been installed on a prior version that are not compatible with the new OS X version.

    Try creating another administrators account in 10.11.1 and set the system up so that you have to log into an account after booting.  Update the system to 10.11.2 using your regular account and reboot the computer and log into the other administrators account and see if the computer works properly.  See Primary Account won't work after El Capitan update post. That post solves many problems similar to what you describe. Also start up Console in the second account (if the computer works) and watch the system.log which may give you some clues as to what is going on which may be preventing your primary account from working.

    As a note, it is very wise to always have an additional administrators account and/or a root account on a Mac so that you can solve problems with the primary user account after an update.

    Good luck

    I see a WHITE screen and mouse arrow top left corner after the update.

    One thing I remember: before it restarted during the update process

    there was a  BEEP sound before the normal restart sound. What did this mean?

    Now I turned the Mac off (switch at the rear side), restarted in safe mode, then in normal mode, and it seems to work...

    The only "extension" I had installed came with MenuBar ReArranger (https://seense.com/mbra/), it's called a "Scripting Addition" (osax) – could this have been be the reason for the problem?

    Many thanks!

    Safe mode cleans out a bunch of kernel caches.  It is possible something in there was incompatible with the new OS X.

    The only "extension" I had installed came with MenuBar ReArranger (https://seense.com/mbra/), it's called a "Scripting Addition" (osax) – could this have been be the reason for the problem?

    The reason many of us ask to see the EtreCheck output is so that we can actually see what extensions, daemons, agents, and other misc things user have installed on their system.  It is surprising the amount of stuff people do not remember installing years ago that have been moving forward with them.

    I've read this. Unfortunately the single BEEP before the normal startup sound is not explained.

    I already had an Admin account in addition to my usual user account so I re-installed 10.11.2 from the osxupdcombo10.11.2.dmg file and logged into the admin account as jpmac4 suggested. Everything worked normally. The Applications folder in Finder was full, all programs I tried worked, etc. So I ran EtreCheck as BobHarris suggested. It said the JakSta Start Item wasn't compatible. I removed it from /Library/StartupItems, restarted, and logged into my usual user account. Everything seems to be working correctly. Wonderful! I haven't tried to use JakSta for awhile but it's been on my machine for a long time. I doubt if it would ever have occurred to me it might be the problem. Thank you both very much.

    I have the same issue with the same model iMac (mid 2011). I'm wondering if it's something to do with my external SSD boot disk? I got the long beep too. Had to restore the mac by re installing mountain lion then restoring from time machine. A royal pain in the harris! I suppose I'll try again when the next update comes out. I assume I can skip this one?

    Thank you Bob.  That EtreCheck program is a life saver and I didn't know about it.  It has been years since I last checked this forum which is a big mistake on my part.  My computer is 5 1/2 years old and it has masses of software on it which has been carried forward all that time.  EtreCheck has reported dozens of issues with software which I will have to fix.

    No part of my anatomy was involved in your installation problems

    I suppose I'll try again when the next update comes out. I assume I can skip this one?

    You can skip anything you like.  It is your hardware.  It is a good idea to download at least one copy of each major release of OS X to keep your future options open, as Apple seems to be removing OS X releases from the store, except for users that have downloaded it at least once.  For those users it is in the App Store -> Purchases tab.  You do not need to actually install what you downloaded, just make the effort to create a history in case you decide El Capitan really is what you want to install when the next major OS X release comes out, and everyone complains about it changing something they loved, or their old additions causing the system to panic or run slow, but do not want to remove them, or they find software they need to make a living is not yet compatible with the next major OS X.

    It is unlikely that the external disk is a problem.  More likely you too have stuff on your system from an older OS X release that does not play nice.

    Since trying to trouble shoot multiple people in one thread becomes confusing, plus this thread has been marked "Answered" so far fewer people will actually look at it, which limits the number of people trying to help.  I would suggest you start a new thread all your own, and post useful information about what you tried, what you are observing, the output from EtreCheck (see above), and the results from booting in "Safe" mode (see above).  Then you are more likely to get help and not get confusing information from answers to the original post which may have nothing to to with your situation, just as your situation may have nothing to do with 's problem.

    Bob, did you have a look at my EtreCheck results?

    As far as I can see nothing is alarming, so I wouldn't want to open a new thread for it.

    Bob, did you have a look at my EtreCheck results?

    At work, I was up to my @&& in Alligators, and did not have time to look at then.

    When I got home, my Wife said we had a power failure during the day, and now we had on internet.  I lost my home router, and spend time juggling backup equipment to provide a router and an access point so I had coverage in all the essential rooms in the house (it is along house so getting coverage at both ends needs more than one access points.

    But before I could do that I had to get the stuff I was going to prepare for my contribution to the groups Christmas Pot-Luck luncheon.

    So my day has been a bit busy.

    The only "extension" I had installed came with MenuBar ReArranger (https://seense.com/mbra/), it's called a "Scripting Addition" (osax) – could this have been be the reason for the problem?

    You have the following kernel extensions installed

        [loaded]    com.globaldelight.driver.Boom2Device (1.1 - SDK 10.10) [Click for support]

        [loaded]    net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio (1.1.1 - SDK 10.8) [Click for support]

        [loaded]    com.kensington.trackballworks.driver (1.1.0) [Click for support]

    If you need them, fine.  If you do not use them anymore, consider removing them using the vendors uninstall instructions.  But at the minimum, make sure you have updated kernel extensions for El Capitan.

        Flash Player: Version: 19.0.0.245 - SDK 10.6 Outdated!Update

    You should go to Adobe and download the latest Flash player.

            Size of backup disk: Too small

                Backup size 999.85 GB < (Disk used 699.91 GB X 3)

    While Time Machine will be backing up, you will be deleting not so old backups much sooner then you may desire.  You should consider getting a larger (at least 2TB's) as your Time Machine backup device.  This is not totally essential, but it is recommended.

        8 MB    Swap Used

    While you have 8GB of RAM, you are starting to use swap space, and you have only been up and running for 4 hours.  You should consider adding more RAM to your iMac.  You can go up to 32GB.  You do not need that much, but like I said you are starting to swap, so if this is how you normally use your iMac, you might want to consider adding more RAM.  MacSales.com (OWC) and Crucial.com are well respected RAM vendors.  BUT if you are happy with your performance, you do not need to add more RAM.

    Many thanks! I had updated the apps which installed the kernel extensions, and now also the flash player (which I need only very rarely). The Time Machine backup drives will be replaced soon. RAM is OK at the moment. I'm relieved that there are no serious problems!
