Q: Cant ugrade to OS X El Capitan

Im trying to Synch my new iphone 6s with my mac and itunes. When i connect:

- it says i need to have the itunes update 12.3.1 which i downloaded.

- When updating the software it doesnt work as it says i need to have a different version of OS X 10.8.5 or later, and needs OS X 10.11

- i have OS X 10.6.8 already so i dont understand.

- i try to download the update for OS X 10.11.2, says i need OS X 10.11.1

I seem to be going round in circles as i cannot find any updates on my automatic software update and manually done states my mac is up to date and i cant find anything on the Apple site or web to download any software update for any other versions ...

Can anyone else advise on what can be done to upgrade my software and itunes to enable me t use my Iphone 6s?

thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Hi,

You can upgrade to El Capitan from OS X 10.6.8 but you should have at least 3 or 4 gb of RAM although the Apple page says 2 gb. You also need plenty of storage space.

Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Edit. You should not try to download the update because you don't have El Capitan installed yet. The upgrade is what you need.

You can't update your Mac beyond 10.6.8. You need to run an upgrade. The old system update feature will only let you update to 10.6.8. For anything above that you'd need to download and install an upgraded version of OS X. Upgrades are only available in the App Store.

What you've downloaded from the Apple website (10.11.2) is only a so called delta update. As you already found out it requires 10.11.1. That doesn't work for you at the moment. You need the full installer of 10.11.2 which is only available for download from the App Store.

    1. Check your Mac against this compatibility list to make sure it will run OS X 10.11 (El Capitan).

    2. Check all of your installed programs on this website and update everything you intend to keep using in El Capitan to the latest major version.

    3. Open "Finder -> Applications -> App Store".

    4. Log in with your AppleID.

    5. Download El Capitan.

    6. !!!MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM!!!

    7. Make sure your backup is actually working.

    8. Run the El Capitan installer from "Finder -> Applications -> Install OS X El Capitan".

    9. Run "App Store -> Updates" to find any additional system and application updates for your Mac.

This is a major upgrade. You will notice a lot of changes as you've missed out 4 versions of OS X (10.7 / 10.8 / 10.9 / 10.10). So don't be surprised and feel free to come back to us if you have more questions.

Thank you so much, very helpful.

Just for clarity, i need to download and upgrade a latest version of OS X.?

I have already downloaded the OS X el Capitan, but when i try to download this it asks me for version OS X 10.11

So before i upgrade to OS X El Capitan, is there version of OS X i should be looking for to upgrade to before i upgrade to El Capitan?

    Kind regards

You need to download El Capitan (current version is 10.11.2) from the App Store. It's some 6 Gigabytes in size. If you downloaded anything from www.apple.com that won't be of any use to you, as it's just updates, not the necessary upgrade.

The App Store has been introduces with Mac OS X 10.6.6. You are running 10.6.8. That means you have the App Store in your Applications folder in your Finder.
