IMAC 5K (late 2014) SCREEN FREEZE + GLITCH

I thought it was a software issue and waited for updates to maybe fix the issue.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)

OS X EL Capitan Version 10.11.2 (15C50)

4 GHz Intel Core i7

32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

SSD 1TB

AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB

It seems the issue happens during "demanding" graphic motion.

At first I noticed winks (quick full black background with pixelation one the way back) and at times glitches would persist on elements with constant motion refresh (FinalCut Pro X playhead / rendering status display in the middle) but last week I had a full screen freeze whilst using Reason 8 with the audio edit panel during playback. It started with flashes (winks) then glitches such as lines and pixelation to more winks and finally a full screen freeze. Audio was still playing but I had no control, couldn't save or stop the playback, mute or else. I had to force restart the iMac.

Although the full freeze has only happened once, the glitches and winks are happening in FinalCut Pro X, Logic X, Reason 8, Capture One, or even iTunes if I'm doing some background rendering/conversion.

I know, I should go to a genius but I've been there... Get an appointment, try to replicate an issue that can be random and happens during a workflow... In a way I'd like to know if this is happening with others, wether it's a known issue with some graphic cards perhaps? It would be nice to go to the genius bar with a known issue that can be fixed without much fiddling about.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Steeve

Glitches just happened in FCP. I assume RED means trouble...

I'll clean up a few points I can do on my own from the extensive list, nothing major, but I'll get the red stuff out of the way (odd plugins etc...) and get a full paste as it happens (I'm in the middle of a work load so I'm sure it will)

Dec 14, 2015 11:57 AM in response to rkaufmann87

I had to rush out, am working on the project again tomorrow and when it happens I will paste the full report. I saw a few red bits from the full report that I'd rather fix before I send it to you again mainly because they were failures due to a couple of safari extensions and some MySQL startup items etc... Basically, the software has allowed me to see things that are "failing" whichI can resolve and therefore eliminate from a potential cause of the problem.

I'll report back tomorrow I'm sure.

Thanks!

When you see the screen artifact, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

I've got some pretty weird things going on... I have checked the console when I had the big freeze and couldn't see anything meaningful (to me) but now... Some pretty odd messages.

I'm currently rescuing data from the "dying" external drive and once I'm done and have disconnected the box, I'll get back on FCP without all the lines and lines of:

14/12/2015 22:25:31.000 kernel[0]: disk2s2: alignment error.

Which are piling on and on and on and on...

Dec 14, 2015 4:22 PM in response to Linc Davis

Yes, I will. It's a 4TB nearly full with all my backups and am currently in the process of saving everything from it. However, it is only connected but never used for any of the tasks that caused the glitches ie: No active files are on it and I turn off Time Machine when working on big projects too.

I'm thinking a clean install. It seems that it got a lot worse since I upgraded to El Capitan and looking at the console, things aren't peachy lookin' pip!!!

I'll give another go in FCP tomorrow and as it happens (pretty sure it will) I'll paste the lines from around the time of the events.

Cheers

Dec 15, 2015 2:22 AM in response to Linc Davis

Yes, but it has happened with absolutely nothing plugged on except for the trackpad and keyboard. When I work on projects I even disconnect from the internet and shut most background tasks. Old school perhaps but I've been doing this since my first Power Mac. It's a bit of a fluke that this problem has had me check on the HDD situation and that's currently my priority to rescue its content.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

If you have AppleCare, you may be entitled to a site visit.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I've clean installed El Capitan and installed only what I need. All official apps, nothing cracked etc...

I've just had a blink starting Safari and in the console at the time saw this:

And more... So apparently there's nothing wrong with the HARDWARE. It all points to software more specifically:

QuickLookUIHelper[4473]: [20:26:06.953] <<<< Boss >>>> figPlaybackBossPrerollCompleted: unexpected preroll-complete notification

iconservicesagent[360]: -[ISGenerateImageOp generateImageWithCompletion:] Failed to composit image for descriptor <ISBindingImageDescriptor: 0x7fd7f3207d60>.

As I do a lot of video and image work, I use quicklook a lot and have the "show preview" option on as default for all folders.

I've been able to replicate the problem with such workflow, using quicklook within folders with hundreds of clips or stills whilst working in FCP.

In Console, the QuickLookUIHelper goes absolutely nuts with errors and I get many blinks etc...

So, I guess the solution is to change my workflow entirely. I used FCP Server for previewing quickly until it was scrapped.

I'll turn off "show preview" for now as well just to see if it'll help.

The saga continues..
