    That is wrong. Of course you can change the associated E-Mail address for an Apple ID. Even the linked article above mentions as much and links to the following article:

    Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

     

    The only limitation  to that, is if the email address associated with the Apple ID is an Apple based email such as a @mac.com, @me.com, or @icloud.com

     

    Those Apple IDs cannot be changed. but should not need to, as Apple based E-Mail addresses do not expire.

    Harvey,

     

    Phil is correct. I recommend however that you call in for apple care support help, as they work with account side issues all the time. The account security team will verify you and advise according to the method you are going to use to swap the email.

     

    You would want to sign out of all devices with iCloud/iTunes/iMessage/FaceTime/Apple Music, before making the modification as you will have an old email pop up constantly. Also Make sure not to restore from a previous backup after the change. You may deal with an Activation lock issue.
