Q: app store unresponsive
Using MacBook Pro early 2011, OS X 10.9.3 (13D65), 2.7GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Initial problem: tried to update iTunes because my Xmas CDs (and sometimes DVDs) are being ejected after much whirring noise. Takes a while, but eventually I get blank App store screen, and the App icon is in my dock with a little red circle superimposed containing the number 2. Dock icon bounces up and down for a little while. Nothing I click activates the updates. Nor does clicking anything else within App store work, not even the help function, upper right.
Went to apple menu and clicked Software Update. That used to work to find out if my software was out of date. I did put it on automatic way back, but occasionally I would check. This time, it sent me to the App store. Same thing happens as with attempt to update iTiunes.
Google search led me to a Mac support page about this problem: Mac App Store: Unresponsive after clicking Updates icon - Apple Support I don't believe any of those circumstances apply in my case (something about NTFS software and/or connected partitions). Search also turned up an answer from Linc Davis that helped somebody else (trashing zz file), which I did. No change in my case.
Nervous to try too much else without getting clear direction. No genius bar in my city. Any geniuses out there? Thanks.

I continued to search through the forums for answers. Somewhere along the line, one of the users reminded every about the old standby troubleshoot: turn your machine off and turn it back on again. Voilà! Even though I'm a bit embarrassed not to have remembered that myself, had to come back and say: App Store responsive now. I updated what needed updating, including iTunes.
Sadly, the original problem is still with me. Unlike many unfortunates, especially after updating to mavericks as I did a while back, dvds play for me most of the time. The occasional one from the library won't play no matter much I clean it and try all my other little tricks. BUT CDs, which used to play for me fine, won't any more. I've tried resetting SMC as recommended here: Re: After installing Mavericks my dvd player quit working No joy. Might go and buy a cleaner disk. Can't think of what else to do at the moment.
Nice to see that I've had a few views. Any out there having CDs ejected? Oddly, a couple of CDs will play for me: one that I burned myself and the other, The English Patient soundtrack. But no guarantee they'll play again, because one of my Christmas CDs played last night but the computer spits it out today.
