When you define a custom envelope size (A7) how do you specify that the document is an envelope (as opposed to a sheet of paper) so that it will feed properly in the printer?

I am using Pages (Version 5.6.1) on a MacBook Air (mid 2012) running OS X El Capitan (Version 10.11.1) to try to print size A7 envelopes (7.25” x 5.25”) on an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g. The printer’s paper tray has movable guides that adjust to hold envelopes so that they feed into the printer lengthwise from the centre of the tray.

I have used “File>Page Setup>Paper Size>Manage Custom Sizes” in Pages to set the paper size to 7.25” x 5.25” and named it “Envelope A7” (using the Pages naming convention for Pages-defined envelopes, just in case the word “envelope” is a key.
)

When I format the envelope using this “custom” paper size it looks gorgeous. However, when I try to print it with an A7 envelope loaded into the paper tray, the printer balks with a message saying that the wrong paper size has been detected. When I load standard letter size paper in the tray it goes ahead and prints, but with the 7.25” x 5.25” document justified down in the bottom right-hand corner of the page.

It’s almost as if there’s something in the definition of the standard Pages-provided “envelope” page sizes that tells the little gremlins who decide how to feed the paper that “this is an envelope”—but I can’t for the life of me figure out what that “something” might be, and its driving me C-R-A-Z-Y!

I saw in another post that this has been an on-going problem with Pages since they introduced Version 5 and that I should make sure that I have the latest driver installed in my printer, which I did—and it still doesn't work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You've identified the crux of my problem—my printer (HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One - N911g) feeds envelopes differently from the way it feeds plain paper. If you look at the attached photo of the paper tray, you'll see a small black box that contains an envelope icon, a document icon and an arrow pointing in the direction of the feed. Note that the envelope icon shows it feeding from the side whereas the document icon shows it feeding from the top in the normal manner. You can also see the guides that can be moved to position an envelope of any size toward the front and center of the tray. This means that the printer needs to know when it's being fed an envelope in order to adjust the printing to occur at right angles to—and at the center of—the paper feed. Pages provides the ability to define a "custom" paper size under "Page Setup," but I don't see anywhere in this process where you can indicate that it is an envelope.

This screenshot shows a Pages template for a #10 envelope showing the Page Setup dialogue box and the pop-up menu of Pages-defined Paper Sizes with the "Envelope #10" selected.

This screenshot shows the same document (#10 envelope) with the Print dialogue box and the pop-up menu of Paper Types (nothing about envelopes.) Although the document is displayed in landscape ijn the dialogue box, when you click the "Print" button, this will print on my printer in portrait when #10 envelopes are loaded as described above.

This creenshot shows my 7.25" x 5.25" (A7) document with my "custom" paper size "Envelope A7" selected.

However, when I click on the "Print" button for this document,

1. If I load an A7 envelope the way it should be (i.e., portrait), I get an error message saying wrong paper size has been detected.

2. If I load an A7 envelope in landscape, it comes out blanl.

3. If I load standard 8.5" x 11" paper, it prints with the 7.25" x 5.25" document justified to the bottom right-hand corner of the page.

The Printer dialogue does not know what an "envelope" is, the name you give it is just a name, all it cares is what size and orientation, so in the case of envelopes make sure it is wider than long.

Are you sure your printer takes envelopes in the paper drawer? Normally they go in the direct feed because of problems with the flap and the extra thickness

Thanks PeterBreis0807. Yes, I am sure my printer takes envelopes in the paper drawer—I use it all the time to print standard business envelopes. I suspected that the custom paper type name was just that —i.e., a name. However, as you appear to be fairly certain of this, do you know how the printer dialogue does know that a custom defined paper type is an envelope?

In your first post you said the envelope feeds "lengthwise" from the tray; that sounds to me like one of the 5.25 edges is feeding first, but your screenshot indicates that 7.25 is the width, so it should be feeding one of the 7.25 edges first. (Or you should create a 5.25 x 7.25 page size and lay your document out in "landscape" orientation.)

"Application (whatever that is)" will read Pages if you are in Pages, TextEdit if you are in TextEdit.

In your case where it reads Page Attributes.

Printer Features should be the last item when you click on that Pop-up Menu.

Your Print Dialogue looks odd, it says For Any Printer, it should show your specific Printer, and there is no Save for PDF nor Show/Hide Details.
