mac book pro with Dell monitor P2414H: how to rotate the display image to portrait mode when I rotate the monitor 90 degrees

I have a mac book pro retina bought in 2014 which I am using with a Dell P2414H monitor.

I bought this monitor because it can rotate to the vertical ("portrait") position but when I do this the display image does not rotate with it.

I have called Dell and they said this is an issue to resolve with Apple.

Anyone else have this problem? and got it fixed?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 9.0.1

Check out this article -> http://osxdaily.com/2010/12/28/rotate-mac-screen-orientation/

In that article, it has the following information (I can verify that it works for El Capitan, see screenshot):

Here’s how to access the screen rotation option in all versions of Mac OS X:

  1. Launch System Preferences from the  Apple menu
  2. Hold down the Command+Option keys and click on the “Display” icon
  3. On the right side of the Display preferences, look for the newly visible ‘Rotation’ drop down menu
  4. Set the rotation you want, in this case it’s likely to rotate 90° for the display to be into a vertical page layout orientation on its side
  5. Close out of System Preferences to have the settings stay in effect

My son and I played around with this on our MacBook Pros. We used a monitor and a TV.

  1. Connect the external monitor.
  2. Hold down the Command+Option keys and open the Displays preference.
  3. Turn mirroring off -- if you don't do this, your MacBook Pro screen will rotate.
  4. Now on the external display, select to rotate it.
  5. At this point you may need to disable mirroring again -- I had to do that on my MacBook Pro.

thanks for the quick response - your advice worked BUT ...

1] by rotating the display 90 degrees it also rotated my laptop display

and

2] my mouse key pad movements did not adapt to the 90degree rotation - so it's very difficult to use the mouse

what I wish I could have is;

1] my laptop to remain in the horizontal display but to have the Dell monitor in the 90degree portrait display

2] the mouse controls work across the two displays in a logical way even though they are in different orientations

is there any hope of having it work this way? Dell has told me that with a PC it would work this way.

I connected my TV (via HDMI), and turned off mirroring. Without even holding down those keys I got the option to rotate the display on the TV. When I selected to rotate it, the MacBook Pro's display didn't rotate but it did become tall and narrow. Unexpected behaviour. I did not confirm the setting so it went back to normal.
