Why does my macbook pro (w/ retina) restart "because of a problem" only when my thunderbolt-to-ethernet adapter is plugged in?

I am in college and in the dormitories there is no WiFi, but they have ethernet ports. I bought my Macbook Pro w/ retina display (so no CD Drive), an ethernet cord, and Apple's thunderbolt ethernet adapter. It works. However, when my mac is left alone for a while, or when it sleeps, and the adapter is still plugged in, it often restarts, then shows a message, "Your computer started because of a problem. Press any key to continue," or something along those lines, in like 5 different languages. This same problem happens with one of my roommate's computers. Why is this happening, and how can I stop it?

In case it helps, the model code is A1502.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)
