how to move photos to seagate backup plus slim

I need to clear some space on my MacBook Air so I can backup my phone. We have thousands of photos which are the culprit and I simply want to move the photos off the computer to the external drive. I bought a Seagate Backup Plus Slim and I thought I could just drag and drop but it's not working - the files can't transfer at all. Do I need to format this Backup Plus Slim drive to talk to the MacBook Air? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance

The very first thing to do when purchasing an external hard disk drive is to erase it using Disk Utility. Disk Utility is in your Mac's Utilities folder.

Select the drive, then the Erase button. Make it look like this:

User uploaded file

The Name is up to you but the other options should be as shown. Click the Erase button to erase the drive.

Then, in the Mac's Photos app, select the photos you wish to archive, then use its File > Export... function. I suggest you select the "Export Unmodified Original..." option unless you prefer to save an edited version. Designate the external drive for the destination.

Then, you can erase those photos from your Photo Library. Use the Image menu > Delete, or press the Delete key on your keyboard.

You're almost finished. Deleted photos will be placed in an album named Recently Deleted. It has a "trash can" icon. They will remain there for the period of time shown, after which they will be permanently deleted. To delete them right away, click the Delete All button, then confirm the dialog that appears next.

Finally, consider creating a backup of your exported photos. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

I have exactly the same problem and already do the Time Machine backups but bought the Seagate Plus Slim in order to save all my photos and videos on an external hard drive so I can get them off my MacBook Air and have them in 2 places. Just followed the steps to erase the drive and then selected 600 photos to export but it didn't work --- a window came up explaining the export operation failed and it listed the first 100 photos with error explanation on each that the file "couldn't be opened because there is no such file". What could this mean?

Have you received an answer yet? I have been trying to download my pictures from iCloud to my Seagate for almost 2 years and Senior Adviser & Engineers are of no help because they can not get their iCloud to download on my Windows 10 Computer after deleting iTunes multiple times each advisor!

They have replaced my iPhone over 15 times and I'm still having the problems with iCloud, GPS don't work (maps that came with the cell don't work & google maps or mapquest don't work...internal antenna don't work), forwarding a text not working right (leave some of the text out) and the last advisor uninstalled my virus protection & iTunes still gave error message. Now my computer has no protection bc advisor deleted it😡 and didn't try to put it back & the problem is still the same, but I'm out more money to purchase another virus protection and ICloud still will not download pictures!
