My new Apple TV v4 does not work smoothly on Airplay with both my MacbookPro and Air laptops but fine with iPhone and iPads Airlay gets so juddery and then the laptop WiFi connections goes off - any clues what is going on?

Devastated to find that the new AppleTV works fine on Airplay/ Mirroring with iPhone and iPad devices but completely useless on the NEW laptops.

Trying to show any video e.g. UTube immediately creates jittering on the TV screen when using the Macbook and within a short time the WiFi connection is knocked out.

What is going on?

I am using ElCapitan and the latest 15" 16GB MacbookPro i7 Macbook and was not expecting a streaming problem.

Absolutely fine on Airplay with bith an iPhone 6 Plus and also an iPad Air

Apple TV, iOS 8, Using iPhone 6 Plus

That will be due to a network issue. There is a difference between mirroring a phone/tablet and pushing out a full desktop in real time

Mmake sure there is no other activity (other streaming, web browsing, network backups etc)

Try connecting Apple TV via ethernet

To see a current status of the network get a report from istumbler or similar. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks

Test on another network

I'm afraid your observation 'there is a difference between IOS and MAC' seems to be barking up the wrong tree.

I have now done some more testing to try and highlight the problem:

First to clarify exactly what the problem is:

Any attempt to use Airplay from the MacbookPro (latest i7 16GB ram, latest version ElCapitan 10.11.2 (15C50)) to the new v4 Apple TV immediately creates internet connectivity problems on the laptop resulting in latency/connection speed/dropout of internet connection on the MAC.

I have now analyzed this further with BOTH my new v4 Apple TV and also my previous Apple TV (HD version) which fortunately I still have and now tried both this morning to compare differences:

  1. It is nothing to do with what type of internet connection is used by the new Apple TV - EXACTLY the same problems with both Ethernet and wireless connections.
  2. On Speedtest without Airplay on the v4 Apple TV I get around 49Mbs download and 16 MBs upload on my Macbook Pro
  3. Using the older Apple TV with mirrored connection to my MacBook Pro I get EXACTLY the same results ie NO PROBLEMS and the connection is stable with no latency problems and judder free on my 50" HD TV . THIS IS THEREFOR NOT A GENERAL mirroring problem or anything to do with the MAC OS as far as I can see.
  4. With the new v4 Apple TV using the same routine as (3) I get either ping latency errors straight away and a disconnection of the MacbookPro WiFi or sometimes (after laboriously re-establishing a WiFi connection) at most about 5Mbs which almost immediately tails down to 1Mbs or less and leads to the WiFi connection to the MacbookPro being disconnected.
  5. I then tried swapping the two locations of the older Apple TV and the new v4 one (i.e. swapped the HDMI and power connections) to check it wasn't a siting problem and obtained EXACTLY the same results.
  6. When I purchased the new v4 Apple TV I had a problem where the MENU button wouldn't work at all and I solved this with a factory reset/update. In case this was a continuing problem I have again reset the v4 Apple TV but this has made no difference.

The problem therefore seems to be that the new v4 Apple TV when mirrored with my Macbook (via Ethernet or WiFi) immediately creates internet connectivity problems with my WiFi connected laptop and this does not happen with the older Apple TV. This must be a problem with the new Apple TV and nothing else as far as I can see.

I have bought another v4 Apple TV as an xmas present and I think I might try that too to see if I can replicate the problem with another v4 Apple TV.

I am also wondering if the Apple TV setup using the IPhone via bluetooth (which is itself a bit of a pain) is the problem and would it work if a manual install was tried. I can also try to replicate it at the shop I bought it from using my MacbookPro and their v4Apple TV but what an absolute pain this is turning out to be especially as my older Apple TV mirrors perfectly.

I have now tried a second new v4 Apple TV, the one which was going to be a present, and have EXACTLY the same problems.

Both the v4 Apple TVs affect the Macbook Pro laptop internet connectivity to the point of hardly any connection speed and to the point of losing the laptop WiFi connection when Airplay to the Apple TV is initiated.

The laptop works fine on Airplay with the older generation Apple TV.

This must be a problem with the v4 Apple TV?

Many thanks for sharing your experience too.

Note my more detailed analysis this morning using Speedtest as the mirrored screen on the TV and how I have noted these issues are ONLY with the new Apple TV v4 and my old Apple TV mirrors absolutely fine.

Note I have also tried connecting a second Apple TV v4 and getting exactly the same problems.

I have also tried a manual setup rather than using the iPhone but this is not the problem.

Any more joy your end?

As I said, another device working doesn't rule out a network issue. There have been select cases with users having such issues on the 3rd gen, but the issue was not with the device and rather that individuals network. The 4th gen is also working fine on my system. Going to another location would show whether the issue persists and help isolate the cause.

Have to say you were absolutely right (network issue) not the apple TV v4 or the new Macbook Pro.

A sign in John Lewis today at the TP-LINK AC1750 display gave me the extra clue - said that new apple devices like new iPhones and laptops would not work at their best if a dual band 5GHz and 2.4 GHz for the latest ac network was not present. Eureka - of course my network was saddled with an old BT Home Hub running just 2.4 GHz.

So there and then I bought a TP-LINK AC1750 Duel Band Cable Wireless Router for just £79.95 (not the ADSL version) and used it this evening to replace the old BT Home Hub but retained the Openreach VDSL modem. All works perfectly and ALL the old Airplay problems - particularly the reduction in network speed and loss of WiFi connection to the MacBook Pro have disappeared.

Thank you for what proved to be the right advice about the problem.

Hey guys. You may not be monitoring this thread anymore, now that you've apparently resolved the issue on your end, BUT can you explain the actual issue that you've diagnosed in detail so those of us dealing with the same problem can work it out on our end hopefully AND so even more HOPEFULLY one of Apple's geniuses might have their attention drawn to it and if it's a major issue in software or firmware, be able to resolve it in the next update?

I'm having the same issue. I have the latest Xfinity Modem/Router running Dual Band Networks for our "Homr Network" as well as a separate high end Linksys 1900 modem running an additional pair of Dual Bands for work. Never had any issues Airplaying from Newer MBPro, iPad Mini 3 or Air 2, bought a new apple tv specifically because I read about VLC's launching of their player in the ApoleTV App store and was excited to learn how to cast our enormous movie library from there.

But I've had ZERO success with Airplay from my iPad or MBPro trying to watch Xfinity X1 App Recordings from my DVR. We're having an issue with the sync feature with Xfinity right now so not all of the programs recorded are showing up in the actual DVR menu, but they DO show up in the online menu or mobile device app and can be played perfectly on any smaller device.

So i figured just Airplay the Xtv app to apple tv like I've done 1,000 times before when traveling and bringing my apple tv on the road with me to whatever hotel or place in staying.

I start the item and it just makes the AppleTV home screen flicker for a second and then kicks me right back to my ipad. The same with casting the chrome tab to the airplay or any other of several attempts. My older version of appletv works just fine! And cost me half as much!!

It strikes me as being a larger communications problem that needs to be addressed, publicized and solved! Pretty ridiculous that such an upgraded and advanced piece of equipment can't continues to execute one of the most basic functions.

All I can add to solving this problem is that juddering issues to do with airplay using the new Apple TV and my newer devices (both laptops that can take advantage of ac duel band) completely disappeared when I change my old BT Homehub router for a 1750AC duel band router. See my post Jan 11, 2016 10:02 AM.

I guess it must all boil down to how effectively the router is allocating resource to individual networked connections and not wifi issues as the problem (before I changed the router) was the same on Ethernet as wireless. The frustrating thing was that these issues were not there using the old Apple TV.

I have a similar issue with this process, but mine started after I loaded El Capitan. Prior to that I had no problem streaming via from my MBPro to my Apple TV (3rd gen). The Apple TV sees my library and will start a program (movie or music video), but after a few minutes it kicks out the wifi and I have to reboot my router (using a NETGEAR WNR2000v4). Bizarre--how can it do that! Oddly, I have no problem streaming from iPad or iPhone via airplay to the Apple TV. Again, I had no problem before El Capitan. Seems to me Apple should be addressing this, but as far as I can tell we are hearing crickets from tech support.

My new Apple TV v4 does not work smoothly on Airplay with both my MacbookPro and Air laptops but fine with iPhone and iPads Airlay gets so juddery and then the laptop WiFi connections goes off - any clues what is going on?
