Mail - Can't delete emails from Trash - they keep reappearing

Since 9.2 update I noticed weird behaviour with Mail app.

Trash folder resurrects deleted emails everytime I delete more than 5 emails or use Trash All.

I've erase all data from device and setup as new device without any data or apple id. (13 times). I just install 1 email account manually (IMAP or POP). Then...the test:

- I receive 15 test messages (numbered 1-15)

- turn off wifi and put into airplane mode

- back to Inbox > read messages 1&2 and delete them

- go to Trash folder > view messages 1&2 and delete them. Trash is empty.

- back to Inbox and select messages 3-9 and delete them

- go to Trash folder - it displays... 9 messages

- delete all messages from Trash folder. Trash is empty.

- back to Inbox> edit > delete all remaining 6 messages

- back to Trash folder - it displays... 15 messages

Any ideas?

mariotheplumber,

As requested I will post my problem here as well.

I spent some time on the problem yesterday, far worse, interesting, and concerning than I originally thought.

Equipment info:

Using Apple Mail to download mail from Verizon carrier.

Use 4 machines 3 of which are set to leave messages on Verizon main server, desktop set to remove from server.

Mac 27 late 2013 desktop running Yosemite 10.10.5

Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion seldom used for mail

iphone 5S ( model ME343LL/A ) ( modem firmware 6.01.00 ) purchased Feb 2014 ( important ) running IOS 9.2 ( 13C75 )

Mac Mini4 ( model MGNR2LL/A ) ourchased Sept 2015 ( important ) running IOS 9.2 ( 12C75 )

Neither the MacPro laptop nor the desk exhibits the problem described below!

BOTH Mini and iPhone exhibit exact same problem and only started exhibiting same AFTER upgrade to 9.2 from 9.0 ( I do not believe I upgraded to 9.1 choosing to wait for 2nd cycle upgrade )

PROBLEM:

ALL, by ALL, I mean ALL emails DELETED from Mini and iPhone back to the ORIGINAL day of startup of use of each device are redownloaded after deletion back to those machines. Actual email is routinely deleted from primaryVerizon mail server daily!!! Email returns to mini back to SEPT 2015, to iPhone back to FEB 2014.

Spam email contain ONLY header and subject doesn't download body. Contact emails contain full body of messages including attachments.

I have tried it all pretty much from deleting various ways clearing them from trash immediately, rebooting device etc etc etc with no effect. The next time I call for new mail I get EVERY mail that was ever received BY THAT DEVICE. The mail downloaded to iPhone goes all the way back to 2/2014 by Mini to 9/2015 so not downloading all my email ( been using apple mail I would guess about 7 or more years ) just the email called for on the device!!!

Okay I have the obvious problem of downloading HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of email if I delete them, every time I call for mail. If I don't delete them have problem of having HUNDREDS of emails on device at all times. If I delete them and leave them in trash re-downloads them to inbox no matter.

The other SERIOUS concern is, where are these emails being downloaded from and hence preserved at. I do not believe at Verizon

doing some general housekeeping and I changed passwords on a couple of the configured accounts.

I then accessed the accounts on MBP / Web server / 8.4 device and sent several test mails to ensure the accounts were still functioning correctly.

I then sent more test mails from 9.2 device….. chaos!

Issue 1

- delete mails from SENT folder

- go to TRASH folder and witness the deleted mails (sometimes the mails are not there!)

- delete mails from TRASH folder

- go to SENT folder and deleted mails are back

Issue 2

SETTINGS> MAIL> ACCOUNTS.. shows duplicates / triplicates of some accounts… some of which it allows me to delete the duplicate, others not. After deleting all duplicates the device would allow > Exit mail app settings and go back to mail app settings - all accounts are gone.

Finally, after a couple of times deleting all accounts - rebooting device - adding accounts - I’m back to where i was with the Trash folder on all POP accounts resurrecting all emails handled on device since last rebuild.

Mail app in IOS9 is ****. What’s more could something be going on with the overall memory useage on the device?

Another day wasted, ****ing around with Apple.

MY RESOLUTION courtesy of AppleCare! I am happy to report that Apple Senior Tech AngelaD worked with me yesterday and my problem appears resolved at this time. My iPhone mail now appears to be operating correctly as is my iPad mini. I finally got around to calling AppleCare and spoke to initial contact who, after reviewing with me the steps I had already taken, passed me onto to a Senior Tech AngelaD. Although I doubted it would work she asked I give her resolution a try after she reviewed all my settings etc with me. The resolution worked and as of this writing my mail continues to function flawlessly again as it had for years.

RESOLUTION ( worked for me anyway on both iPad mini and more importantly on iPhone )

SETTINGS

MAIL

Go to ACCOUNT ( my Case Verizon POP ) DELETE same.

REBOOT device

SETTING

MAIL

ADD ACCOUNT - re-added my account all has worked flawlessly since 16 hours so far and numerous checks on mail both machines. ( I did same on iPad mini )

I am a happy camper so far 🙂

hello georgeny,

Happy to hear that your issue is resolved. I've previously followed your path (16 times now) - Mail is still ******!

Apple have several bugs with Mail in IOS9 releases. If only Apple would allow regression to previous IOS versions, but then again I guess that would permit users to emphatically prove the issuses lie with buggy releases.

I wait to hear from Apple Support and tech team assigned. Meanwhile Apple devices remain as Paperweights on the desk.

Many thanks for update and fingers crossed your problems remain gone.

3 months on and still living with the issue.

And, I have heard absolutely nothing from the Senior Apple Support Guy I spoke with who promised to call me back on 21st December 2015...zlich, no call, no email, nothing.

mariotheplumber,

Sorry to hear your situation continues. My similar email problem remains resolved on both my iPhone and iPad mini thankfully. I think if you have not tried to follow up again it is time to do so. Seems apparent that the senior guy isn't following up. Personally I would try to chase him down and make it his problem until it gets correct but at very least annoy someone at Apple.

Good Luck

Thanks George in NY!

I was having the same sort of problem but mine was specific to sent email. I'd start with an empty TRASH folder on my iPhone. Then I would select the SENT folder and DELETE ALL items. Then I'd go back to the TRASH and every message I'd sent since buying the phone would reappear. Finally followed your instructions – deleted the email account in question from the SETTINGS app, rebooted the phone, then added the email account again from scratch – and voila! my iPhone Mail has worked perfectly ever since.

Turns out my server – Time Warner Cable's Roadrunner – is an IMAP system but the Roadrunner account had been erroneously created as a POP account when I first activated this iPhone. Not sure exactly how that happened but I assume it was user error. But no worries – it's all worked out now!

Thanks!
