green exercise status icon

I noticed a green exercise icon, the little person running, in the status area of my watch today. That's where the red dot, quarter moon, etc., appear. I had already done two exercises today, elliptical and other, for a total of 83 minutes. I had saved both. When I looked at the exercise app on the watch, it just showed me the exercise choices, as usual. After looking several times, I finally selected indoor walk, walked a few steps, and stopped the exercise. Now the little green runner was gone.

I am using the latest WatchOS and iOS on my iPhone 6 Plus. I can find no mention of the green runner status anywhere. Anyone know what's up?

I Have been having this issues since the 2.0.1 update. When I take my watch off charge in the morning I noticed the green man icon at the top of the screen. It also increase my exercise minutes significantly and drains my battery as it is taking heart rate measurements more frequently. The watch has basically started a workout in the background but when I go into the workout app there is nothing started. i have to start a workout then stop it straight to turn this off or else my battery lasts about 2-3 hours as its constantly checking my heart rate.

I have tried unpairing and repairing, doing a hard reset on both the watch and the phone but to no avail. It's seems to be a bug in the latest update.

Hi Robert

It may help to restart both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off together first, then restart your iPhone before restarting your watch:

- To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off;

- To turn it on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

Otherwise, it may help to unpair and re-pair your watch. The Watch app on your iPhone takes watch backups automatically, including a fresh one when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup when offered the option during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).

- Unpair your Apple Watch and iPhone - Apple Support

- Set up your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you use Strava (a third-party fitness app), this issue can be caused by having an activity paused in Strava on your watch. If this is the case, end the activity from within Strava on your watch.

Otherwise (or if the Workout icon is still shown on your watch after ending a paused activity), it may help to temporarily turn off Strava's ability to share (write) data to the Health app on your iPhone:

- On your iPhone, in the Health app: Sources > Strava > under "Allow Strava to Write Data", turn off Heart Rate.

- Enable the setting again before next recording a workout with Strava.

To prevent this issue from happening again in future, finish and save your activity from the Strava app on your watch, not from Strava on your iPhone.
