how do you remove an old apple id in Icloud

I recently changed ISP's so I have a new email address. I am unable to remove the old email address, and I am constantly being prompted to enter the password for the old apple id (which was the old email address). I have created a new id but cannot get the phone to recognize it. HELP

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.2

You do not need to create a new Apple ID just because your email changed. You can change the email address associated with your current Apple ID instead:

The account still exists. Enter it on the 2nd screen and then click Forgot password. Once you get the password, sign out.
