imac 27 question mark folder and heating up

When I boot this iMac 27, first I get a blank screen for approximately 5 minutes (keyboard not responsive during this time), then I get a flashing question mark folder. I have tried several combinations of key (option + coomand + P + R and command + R) to no avail. I notice that the top of the iMac gets exteemely hot.

Suggestions?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), unsure about date & version of OS X

The flashing folder means the computer was not able to detect an operating system being installed. If recovery mode is not loading it's possible the hard drive is not being recognized. Try holding down Option (Alt) when the startup chime sounds. This will load the startup manager so you can select which disk to boot up. If your normal startup disk (e.g. Macintosh HD) is not listed try booting into Internet Recovery by holding down Command + Option + R when the startup chime sounds. If your computer is older than 2011 it may not be able to use internet recovery. If internet recovery does load, open Disk Utility to check for the internal hard drive.
