I am not entirely sure what you are trying to do but lets see if we can get some for you that works.
To me, it sounds like you are trying to use your iMac as a secondary monitor. If that is the case, take a look at the article below for the system requirements for using your iMac as a secondary screen on your Mac. Make sure to have a Thunderbolt or Mini Display cable depending on how MacBook Pro specs

Dec 18, 2015 8:33 AM in response to norm123by Mc-irish,thank you Norm 123, will be trying this this afternoon, i bought a thunderbolt cable , even though i asked for a mini display port one and they said its t the same thing. it fits but does not look interially like my MDP. I really appreciate you answering me : will post if it worked.!
