Q: Technology to print photos

Does anyone know what technology Apple uses to photo prints ordered from Photos on Mac. Is it ink-based or more like traditional photograph where the image is exposed on a sensitive layer?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

It's ink based. Printing to paper with sensitive layers requires negatives, a projector, processing chemicals, etc. and that's old, old, old school.

Well, it's not strictly true. There are modern technologies like Lambda or Lightjet that expose digital images on photographic paper. Photographic/chromogenic prints have different colour gamut than prints produced using a ink or toner and their quality is generally superior.

Are you familiar with what Apple does or are you assuming it's ink-based?

I'm guessing based on the info I learned about Apple's printing of books, cards, etc., and their 4 color laser printers.  All the info we've gotten back from Apple regarding printing has not included prints.
