Ive recently been looking at making a hackintosh, however I dont know if its legal or not, I have been told it is as long as your using a legally obtained copy of mac, if it is illegal what are the chances apple will take you to court?

No. It is not legal. The EULA does not allow Mac OS X to be run on any hardware other than that made and sold by Apple.
you can install whatever you want on your Mac, Windows, Ubantu, you could probably virtualize OS 2/Warp for Mac, but you can not legally install OS X on anything that is not an Apple Computer.
