Q: Imac crashing on Yosemite, Etrecheck report included

Hi there,

I am hoping I get some advice on my Imac Retina issues: heavily crashing several times a day.

While it definitely crashes with a migrated project from FCP7 to Premiere via XML import, I have the feeling that the crashes may be due to actual system issues. When I bought this machine I remember it crashing a lot from the beginning but I ignored this, then the crashes seemed to go away and they sporadically have come back here and there.. and now heavily crashes when Premiere Pro is open.

I have just removed the following apps to make sure these aren't interfering: Livestream Producer 1.1.3., Skype and Flash Player.

I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions twice within this past week

I have reset the PRAM just now

So here is the latest Etrecheck report... at the very end of the document it shows a kernel "panic"...

What are the next steps I need to do?  This machine is still under guarantee but don't know if the Adobe premiere software or something faulty in the PP project (migrated from FCP7) may be causing these constant crashing...

Thank you very much!

The "etrecheck" stuff is irrelevant. The relevant information is in the panic report, if you have one.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION â–¹ System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Please remove "Procaster" and see whether the panics stop.

Any third-party software that doesn't install from the App Store or by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

    Hello haikufilms,

Obviously you aren't going to have much success attempting to uninstall some software that you have already uninstalled.

Can you describe exactly what happens during these "crashes"? You do have one kernel panic, but that was over three weeks ago. While EtreCheck reports all kernel panics, it only records crash logs for the past three days. So you haven't even had any true application crashes in that time frame.

I think you might have better luck asking about this problem in an Adobe support forum like this one: https://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere

The only people on this forum are other Apple users. There are actual Adobe tech support engineers in the Adobe support forum. It seems logical that you will get much better responses from them.

Hello and thank you again for the replies.

I uninstalled Livestream and Skype and Flash Playere by using their uninstaller and by using the App Cleaner when there was no way to uninstall per the manufacturer.

The crashes happen usually with Premiere Pro 2014.v2 running with one open project where I am just playing footage or a sequence or when trying to import an XML or another project into a main project.  But I have seen similar crashes when I was running only FCP7 in this computer and I thought it was due to the fact that officially Apple may not support FCP7 in Yosemite.

When it happens in Premiere, the screen will freeze for several seconds, can't move mouse or type, then crashes and a moment later restarts on its own.

For some reason EtreCheck is not showing all the crashes but I definitely have several crashes last week and today I had at least 4-5 crashes within 2 hours but Etreck doesn't show them in their record.

The Kernel panic seems to be only from Nov 23 for sure...

Here is a report from yesterday.. only pasting the info on the crashes...which were just a few on Dec 15..

You had not removed "Procaster" when that panic happened. If there is a more recent panic report, please post it.

    Hello again haikufilms,

That's getting closer. Still, can you be more specific about the word "crash"?

There are a number of things that can happen that might be considered a "crash".

    1) A true kernel panic. The screen will fade and a funky little window will appear in the middle saying you need to restart your computer, in multiple languages. There may be other ugly text on the screen too.

    2) Spontaneous logout. You are typing away or doing something else and all of the sudden you are back at the login screen. Had you actually tried to perform a logout, there is no way you could have done it that fast.

    3) Total system lockup. The mouse pointer stops moving. The time stops updating. You can't turn on the caps lock key.

    4) Graphics lockup. The mouse pointer stops moving. The time stops updating. You can turn the caps lock key on and off.

    5) I/O lockup. System starts acting funny, but programs seem to be running. As you switch to them, they immediately start beach balling.

    6) A true app crash. You are working in an app and then it is gone. A few seconds later you get a dialog saying the app has "quit unexpectedly".

    7) An app lockup. You are working in an app and the mouse pointer changes to a beachball.

    8) Spontaneous app termination. You are working in an app and then it is gone.

I have 8 distinct issues listed and I'm sure I've missed a few. I only listed the ones I have experienced and can think of off the top of my head. You will only get a log file report on 1 and 6. Sometimes you may get a hang report on 7. There are some very subtle differences. Pay particular attention to the behaviour of the caps lock key.

I'm not familiar with the software you are using so I don't know how it behaves normally or how it behaves when it crashes. You are definitely not getting many crash log files. Kernel panics are usually caused by some type of hardware fault. They can also be caused by incompatible or buggy 3rd party software that includes a kernel extension. They can also be caused by bugs in the operating system. Other types of "crashes" involving the entire system are likely something else. Application crashes are something else entirely.

Sometimes there might be some hints in your main log file in Console.app, but 99.9% of that stuff is meaningless. And there is lots and lots and lots of it. I think your best bet is the Adobe support forums. You are running an out-of-date version of Yosemite. I don't suggest updating to El Capitan, but you probably should be at 10.10.5. Unfortunately, you can't count on these "minor" updates being minor anymore. If you depend on any 3rd party software, especially anything expensive, you need to stay in very close touch with them and update your computer when and only when they say it is safe to do so. I don't know what Adobe recommends for your particular version of Adobe software. You should ask.
