Hi Robert,

No, there is no such thing as "rebuilding the desktop" in OS X". Are you having any problems with anything?

Generally, there should be very little maintenance necessary for Tiger.

As Klaus mentioned, run Repair Permissions after install and updates. Also a "Verify Disk" before updating

The system runs periodic scripts to clear log and cache files in the wee hours each morning. If you do not leave your Mac on 24/7 you may want to run them manually now and then.

Also, there is usually no need to optimize or defrag in OS X.

In short, the less you do, the better. Unless you have a specific problem.

Repairing permissions is unlikely to hurt your system, but it is very unlikely to help, either. It most definitely isn't required regular maintenance.

If you want to read more, here's Apple's own information about Disk Utility and permission repair: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751.

I wrote a text about it all that I tried to keep simple here: http://www.bjoreman.com/permissions.

Finally, here's a more pointed version of the story: http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000410.php
