Automatic Login under El Capitan

I want to have my MacBook Pro (running OS 10.11.2) automatically login to the primary (admin) account on startup. This was possible on earlier versions of OS X.

Now I am only being offered "Off" and "Guest" as options for auto login.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), null

It still is possible now. Go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy first. Where it says "Disable automatic login," make sure this is unchecked. Then, go to Users & Groups. Make sure your account is highlighted in that left-hand pane and click "Login Options." Make sure "Automatic Login" is set to "On."

Under Yosemite (and presumably therefore El Capitan - and maybe some other versions of OS X) it is not possible to set automatic login if the System Password has been set to be the same as the Apple ID password!

I had, of course, tried unlocking the ASecurity & Privacy preference panel to allow me to uncheck the "Disable Automatic Login" box, but it remained greyed out.

Eventually I found the answer to the problem elsewhere in these Support Community pages. After the System Password had been changed the "Disable auto-login" box became unchecked and was no longer grey. I could then setup auto-login on the Users & Groups panel.

Thanks to everyone who helped on here and the other thread.

Thanks VernonQ! Changed the log-in password on my Mac Mini running El Capitan so it was not the same as my Apple ID, as you suggested, and now the "Disable Automatic Login" box is no longer grayed out and can be unchecked with no problem.

For any forum moderators looking at this thread: It would be useful for Apple to add this tip to the places users would normally seek the answer, such as the Mac Help "Set up users on your Mac" page.
